Dave Lee (darts Player)
David Lee is a retired English professional darts player who competed in British Darts Organisation events in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Career Lee made his World Professional Darts Championship debut in 1983, defeating Canada's Tony Holyoake in the first round before losing in the second round to Eric Bristow. After a first round exit in 1985, Lee made it to the second round in 1986 and 1987. Lee made a total of four appearances in the World Championship but never made it to the quarter-finals. Lee also played in the Winmau World Masters five times with his best run coming in 1983, reaching the semi-finals with notable wins over then World Champion Keith Deller and Bob Anderson, eventually losing to Mike Gregory. He also reached the quarter-finals in the 1984 World Masters, losing to Deller who managed to avenge his defeat to Lee 12 months before. John Lowe (darts Player)
John Lowe (born 21 July 1945) is an English former professional darts player. Along with Eric Bristow and Jocky Wilson, he was known for dominating darts during the 1980s. Lowe was world champion on three occasions, in 1979, 1987 and 1993. He was also a two-time winner of the Winmau World Masters and a two-time World Cup singles champion. In total, Lowe won 15 BDO and WDF majors. He held the World No. 1 ranking on four occasions. In October 1984, he became the first player to hit a televised nine-dart finish. Lowe is one of only six players to have won the World Championship three or more times, and was the first person to win it in three separate decades; along with Phil Taylor, he remains one of only two players to achieve this. Terry O'Dea
Terence "Terry" O'Dea (3 May 1945 – 18 May 2021) was an Australian professional darts player who competed in the 1970s and 1980s. Darts career O'Dea rejoined of the BDO in March 1978. O'Dea played in ten successive BDO World Darts Championships with his best run coming in 1982 and 1986 where he reached the quarter-finals. O'Dea also played in four Winmau World Masters, World Masters tournaments, reaching the quarter-finals in 1984. He appeared on the UK television show Bullseye (UK game show), Bullseye presented by Jim Bowen in 1984 where he scored 300 points (in 9 darts) for charity. He appeared two years later and scored 305. O'Dea quit the BDO in 1988. Luc Marreel
Luc Marreel (born 2 February 1949 – 11 May 2015) was a Belgian professional darts player who competed in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Darts career Marreel played in the BDO World Darts Championship five times. In 1981, he beat Denmark's Jan Larsen in the first round before losing in round two to Tony Brown. In 1982, Marreel beat Alistair Forrester in the first round, but lost in the second round to Sweden's Stefan Lord. In 1983, Marreel again won his first round match, defeating the Welshman Ceri Morgan 2–0 in the opening round but lost 3–0 in the second round again to Lord. Marreel suffered a first round exit in 1984 to America's Rick Ney but reached the second round once more in 1985, beating Dave Lee in round one but was defeated in the second round by 1983 World Champion Keith Deller. Split In Darts
The split in darts refers to the acrimonious dispute between top professional darts players and the game's governing body, the British Darts Organisation (BDO), in 1993, leading to the formation of the World Darts Council (WDC). Between 1994 and 2020, each organisation held its own version of the World Professional Darts Championship. The split was prompted by the game's big decline in television coverage in 1989 and the early 1990s, and by what the players saw as the BDO's inability to reverse that decline. The dispute culminated in the 16 top ranked players - including every previous world champion who was still active - breaking away from the BDO to form the WDC. The BDO responded by banning the 16 defectors from all BDO-sanctioned darts events, which included prohibition of remaining BDO affiliated players from even engaging in exhibition matches against any of the defectors. Steve Gittins
Stephen Gittins (29 August 1959 – 20 February 2013) was an English professional darts player. Career Gittins played twice at the BDO World Darts Championship. In 1989, he beat Finland's Kexi Heinäharju in the first round but lost in the second round to five-time World Champion Eric Bristow. He returned to the Lakeside a year later and again reached the second round, beating Australian Wayne Weening in round one, but again lost in the second round to Bristow. Gittins also played twice at the Winmau World Masters, reaching the quarter-finals in 1985. Gittins also won three open tournaments, winning the Welsh Open and Swedish Open in 1988 and then the Finnish Open in 1989. Gittins disappeared from the scene after the 1990 BDO World Darts Championship but briefly made a comeback at the 2005 UK Open (darts), PDC UK Open. News Of The World Darts Championship
The News of the World Championship was one of the first major organised darts competitions, which began in 1927. It became England's first national darts competition from 1947, as the years went by it gradually became international essentially becoming the first world darts Championship and was the hardest darts tournament to win until its demise in 1990. There was also a brief revival of the event in 1996/97, but it is now discontinued. It was organised by the National Darts Association of Great Britain (NDAGB). Before the tournament was established, darts competitions were held in various forms around England – often as friendly matches between pubs. After World War I, pub breweries began arranging darts leagues which began to sow the seeds for the establishment of a national darts competition. The tournament was noted for using an 8 ft oche rather than the regulation 7 ft 9 ¼ inches. One of these competitions was held in Hythe Street, Dartford, Kent in 1927. The ...
