Dave Goodwin
David Goodwin (born 15 October 1954) is an English former footballer who played in the Football League for Bury, Crewe Alexandra, Mansfield Town, Rochdale, and Stoke City. Career Goodwin was born in Nantwich and began his career with Stoke City where he made an impressive start scoring on his debut in a 2–0 home win over West Ham United at the start of the 1973–74 season. He played six more times for the "Potters" that season scoring in another 2–0 win at home to Norwich City. He spent the summer of 1974 playing in the United States with Miami Toros. He returned to the Victoria Ground in 1975–76 playing in four matches and then spent time out on loan at Workington playing seven times for the Borough Park side failing to find the net. He returned to Stoke and played in 13 matches in 1976–77 scoring in a 1–0 win away at Ipswich Town as Stoke were relegated at the end of the season. Nantwich
Nantwich ( ) is a market town and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East in Cheshire, England. It has among the highest concentrations of listed buildings in England, with notably good examples of Tudor and Georgian architecture. It had a population of 14,045 in 2021. History The origins of the settlement date to Roman times, when salt from Nantwich was used by the Roman garrisons at Chester (Deva Victrix) and Stoke-on-Trent as a preservative and a condiment. Salt has been used in the production of Cheshire cheese and in the tanning industry, both products of the dairy industry based in the Cheshire Plain around the town. Football League Fourth Division
The Football League Fourth Division was the fourth-highest division in the English football league system from the 1958–59 season until the creation of the Premier League prior to the 1992–93 season. Whilst the division disappeared in name in 1992, the 4th tier of English football continued as the Football League Third Division, and later became known as Football League Two. North American Soccer League (1968–1984)
The North American Soccer League (NASL) was the top-level major professional soccer league in the United States and Canada that operated from 1968 to 1984. It was the first soccer league to be successful on a national scale in the United States. The league final was called the Soccer Bowl from 1975 to 1983 and the Soccer Bowl Series in its final year, 1984. The league was headed by Commissioner Phil Woosnam from 1969 to 1983. The NASL laid the foundations for soccer (or association football) in the United States that helped lead to the country hosting the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the set-up of Major League Soccer (MLS) in 1996. Statistics of North American Soccer League in season 1973. This was the 6th season of the NASL. Overview Nine teams took part in the league with the Philadelphia Atoms winning the championship. During the season, Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz from Vera Cruz, Mexico, played each of the nine NASL clubs in exhibition games that counted in the league's final standings. The 1973 season would be the last season in which games from non-league clubs counted in league standings. A week before the NASL Final 1973, commissioner Phil Woosnam announced that no team in the league made a profit during the season. In a unique twist, the team with home field for the NASL Championship Game determined the date and time the game was to be played. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. George Eastham
George Edward Eastham, OBE (born 23 September 1936) is an English former footballer. He is known for playing for Newcastle United, Arsenal and Stoke City, as well as a member of England's 1966 World Cup-winning squad. However, he is also notable for his involvement in a 1963 court case which proved a landmark in improving players' freedom to move between clubs. Eastham began his career with Northern Irish side Ards before moving back to England with Newcastle United in 1956. He became a fine inside forward for the "Magpies" but then shocked the club by demanding a move away which Newcastle rejected. Eastham took his case to the courts and won his case moving to Arsenal. Eastham spent six seasons at Highbury making 223 appearances scoring 41 goals for the "Gunners" before joining Stoke City in 1966.
