Data For Black Lives
Data for Black Lives (D4BL) is an American non-profit organization with the mission of using data science to create concrete and measurable change in the lives of black people. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Data for Black Lives was founded by Yeshimabeit Milner and Lucas Mason-Brown. Milner attended Brown University; having encountered discrimination towards the black community, she organized a group of scientists to combat the mistreatment of black people within data algorithms. History D4BL began in November 2017 as statistical research project, and expanded into working with a team of people on data analysis. The formation of D4BL was initiated by Yeshimabeit Milner, who witnessed racial discrimination, watching her peers suffer from police brutality. Yeshimabeit Milner
Yeshimabeit "Yeshi" Milner is an American technologist and activist. She is the executive director and co-founder of ''Data for Black Lives''. Early life and education Yeshimabeit Milner grew up in Miami, Florida. Starting in her late teens, Milner became involved in activism and data science. She worked with the ''Power U Center for Social Change'' as a high school senior. Milner attended Brown University, graduating in 2012 with a BA degree in Africana Studies. Career In 2013 at age 22, after returning to Miami after college, Milner started working with the ''Power U Center for Social Change'' and looking at Black infant mortality rates locally in trying to understand why they were disproportionately so high. Black in AI, formally called the Black in AI Workshop, is a technology research organization and affinity group, founded by computer scientists Timnit Gebru and Rediet Abebe in 2017. Diversity in computing refers to the representation and inclusion of underrepresented groups, such as women, people of color, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals, in the field of computing. The computing sector, like other STEM fields, lacks diversity in the United States. Despite women constituting around half of the U.S. population they still are not properly represented in the computing sector. Racial minorities, such as African Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians or Alaska Natives, also remain significantly underrepresented in the computing sector.
