Darklands (film)
''Darklands'' is a British horror film written and directed by Julian Richards, starring Craig Fairbrass, Jon Finch, Rowena King, which was released in 1997. Richards wrote the screenplay after attending the Beltane Fire Festival in Edinburgh. It was produced by Paul Brooks at Metrodome Films. Dubbed "the Welsh ''Wicker Man''" by the UK press, Darklands is possibly the first home grown Welsh horror film. The film forms part of the growth of the Cool Cymru era of arts and culture. Plot Darklands follows journalist Frazer Truick as he investigates the mysterious death of the brother of trainee journalist Rachel Morris. Delving deeper, Truick becomes convinced that the tragedy was murder, committed by a bizarre religious cult. But as the evidence unfolds, things take on a more sinister and potentially lethal significance for the reporter, as he becomes embroiled in devil worship, witchcraft and ultimately human sacrifice. Julian Richards (director)
Julian Richards (born 31 July 1968) is a Welsh film director. He is associated with the Cool Cymru era of culture and arts in Wales. Biography Early life Julian Richards was born in Newport, South Wales, where his father owned DIY retail store Handiland. Inspired by his uncle Rex Richards Hollywood acting career, Julian decided to become a film director and produced several short films on super 8 mm including ''The Curse of Cormac'', ''Gang War'', ''Evil Inspirations'' and ''The Girl That Cried Wolf'' which was broadcast by the BBC in the "16 and Up Video Showcase". Education In Newport, Julian attended St Julian's Comprehensive School and Gwent College of Higher Education where he studied Art & Design Foundation. Human sacrifice is the act of killing one or more humans as part of a ritual, which is usually intended to please or appease gods, a human ruler, an authoritative/priestly figure or spirits of dead ancestors or as a retainer sacrifice, wherein a monarch's servants are killed in order for them to continue to serve their master in the next life. Leeds Film Festival
The Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF) is the largest film festival in England outside London. Founded in 1987, it is held in November at various venues throughout Leeds, West Yorkshire. In 2015, the festival welcomed over 40,000 visitors and showed over 300 films from around the world, shorts and features, both commercial and independent. LIFF features five programme sections: Official Selection, Retrospective, Cinema Versa, Fanomenon and Short Film City. The Sitges Film Festival ( ca, Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya, links=no) is an annual film festival held in Sitges, Spain, specialized in fantasy and horror films, of which it is considered one of the world's foremost international festivals. Festival Of Fantastic Films (UK)
The Festival of Fantastic Films is an annual non-profit celebration of ''cinema fantastique'', held annually in central Manchester, England. It was created by Tony Edwards and the late Harry Nadler (both members of the Delta Film Group, an amateur film-making society active in the 1960s and both past organisers of an Eastercon), together with their fellow enthusiast Gil Lane-Young. Espoo Ciné International Film Festival is an annual event held in Espoo, Finland, in August. The Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF) is an annual film festival in Newport Beach, California, typically held in late April. In 2022, it was announced that the festival have permanently changed its date to be held in October, as the festival began positioning itself for Oscar season. Fantasporto, also known as Fantas, is an international film festival, annually organized since 1981 in Porto, Portugal.
