Société Dargaud, doing business as Les Éditions Dargaud, is a publisher of Franco-Belgian comics series, headquartered in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. It was founded in 1936 by Georges Dargaud (), publishing its first comics in 1943. History Initially, Dargaud published novels for women. In 1948, it started '' Line'', a "magazine for elegant women", as well as a French edition of the Belgian ''Tintin'' magazine. Georges Dargaud
Georges Dargaud (27 April 1911 – 18 July 1990) was a French publisher of comics, most famously '' Tintin magazine'', ''Asterix'', and ''Lucky Luke'', through his Dargaud company. Biography Dargaud started out working as a broker for an advertising agency. In April 1936, he and his wife, Irene, founded Dargaud S.A. The publishing company focused on corporate communications and family magazines. In 1943, Dargaud began publishing comics, starting with ''Allo les jeunes''. Two years later, he published comic albums of ''Bob et Bobette'' by Loys Pétillot (not to be confused with the French version of Willy Vandersteen's ''Suske en Wiske''). In 1948, Dargaud was approached by Raymond Leblanc, the publisher of Belgian comic magazine '' Journal de Tintin''. Europe Comics is a pan-European comics and graphic novel digital venture run by 13 European comics publishers from eight European countries. The project received funding in 2015 from the European Commission's Creative Europe Programme, and launched officially in November of that year. Lucky Luke
''Lucky Luke'' is a Western ''bande dessinée'' series created by Belgian cartoonist Morris in 1946. Morris wrote and drew the series single-handedly until 1955, after which he started collaborating with French writer René Goscinny. Their partnership lasted until Goscinny's death in 1977. Afterwards, Morris used several other writers until his own death in 2001. Since Morris's death, French artist Achdé has drawn the series, scripted by several successive writers. The series takes place in the American Old West of the United States. It stars the titular Lucky Luke, a street-smart gunslinger known as the "man who shoots faster than his shadow", and his intelligent horse Jolly Jumper. Lucky Luke is pitted against various villains, either fictional or inspired by American history or folklore. Jean-Michel Charlier
Jean-Michel Charlier (; 30 October 1924 – 10 July 1989) was a Belgian comics writer. He was a co-founder of the famed Franco-Belgian comics magazine ''Pilote''. Média-Participations is a French media concern, controlled by a Belgian holding concern, specialized in Franco-Belgian comics. It has some forty publishers in its portfolio, including Dupuis, Dargaud, Le Lombard, Fleurus (publisher), Fleurus, La Martinière Groupe, La Martinière, and Abrams Books, Abrams. René Goscinny (, ; 14 August 1926 – 5 November 1977) was a French comic editor and writer, who created the ''Astérix'' comic book series with illustrator Albert Uderzo. Raised largely in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he attended French schools, he lived for a time in the United States. There he met Belgian cartoonist Morris. After his return to France, they collaborated for more than 20 years on the comic series ''Lucky Luke'' (in what was considered the series' golden age). He wrote ''Iznogoud'' with Jean Tabary. Goscinny also wrote a series of children's books known as ''Le Petit Nicolas'' (''Little Nicolas'') illustrated by Jean-Jacques Sempé. Ellipsanime (formerly known as Le Studio Ellipse, Ellipse Programme and Ellipse Animation) is a French animation studio that produces television programs. It was founded in 1987. In February 2000 it merged with Expand SA; Expand sold the company to Dargaud in 2003, and it became Ellipsanime in 2004. In 2014, Ellipsanime bought the assets of Moonscoop SA. Ellipse has worked with many other animation companies, with one good example being the Canadian animation firm Nelvana Limited. Their early collaboration goes back to the television animated adaptation of the My Pet Monster franchise in 1987.
