Darfur Campaign
The Darfur campaign or Darfur offensive is a Theater (warfare)#Theatre of operation, theatre of operation in the War in Sudan (2023), war in Sudan that affects five States of Sudan, states in Darfur: South Darfur, East Darfur, North Darfur, Central Darfur and West Darfur. The offensive mainly started on 15 April 2023 in West Darfur where the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) forces captured Geneina, the conflict came after several days of high tensions between the forces and the government. The Battle of Geneina and the Battle of Nyala were the largest battles of the campaign, which all in total killed hundreds of civilians and both ended up with a RSF victory between 20 April to 2 May 2023. Minni Minnawi
Suliman Arcua Minnawi ( ar, سليمان أركو مناوي), known as "Minni Minnawi" (; born December 12, 1968 in Furawiyya, North Darfur), is a Sudan, Sudanese politician who was the leader of the largest faction of the Sudanese Liberation Army. A former educator, Minnawi was the Secretary of Sudan Liberation Army leader, Abdul Wahid Nur, before the organisation split in 2004. Minnawi signed a treaty, known as the Darfur Peace Agreement, with the Khartoum government in May 2006. Nevertheless, in July 2006, fighting broke out around the North Darfur town of Korma, resulting in the deaths of at least 80 people. Gibril Ibrahim
Dr. Gibril Ibrahim Mohammed ( ar, جبريل إبراهيم محمد) is a Sudanese politician. He is the leader of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). He was chosen to replace his brother, Khalil, on 26 January 2012, after Khalil's death in a SAF airstrike in Northern Kordofan in December 2011. He recently allied with SAF. Biography Ibrahim was born on 1 January 1955 in al-Tina, North Darfur, in what was then the Anglo-Egyptian colony of Sudan. His father died when he was 4 years. Ibrahim studied for an undergraduate degree at the University of Khartoum, before leaving Sudan at the age of 25. Ibrahim was offered a scholarship in Japan, where he spent 7 years, completing his Masters and Doctorate in economics, and becoming a fluent Japanese speaker. Ali Yaqoub Gibril
Ali Yaqoub Gibril ( ar, علي يعقوب جبريل; 1 January 1964 – 14 June 2024) was a Sudanese military leader in the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He was accused of leading military operations that caused significant human rights violations in Darfur. Jibril started his career as a tribal militia leader in Central Darfur, where he was accused of committing crimes against an ethnic group. Later, he joined the RSF and took command in Central Darfur. In May 2024, the United States imposed sanctions on Ali Yaqoub Gibril and another RSF leader, Osman Mohammed Hamid, for their roles in exacerbating the conflict and increasing violence in Darfur. The sanctions include freezing their assets in the United States and banning financial transactions with them. Sudanese National Alliance (SNA) is a Sudanese political party. Formed in 1994 as a democratic, secular, non-regional party, the SNA was one of the four original members of the National Democratic Alliance, the coalition of Northern groups and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement in opposition to the al-Bashir government in Khartoum. From the beginning, former general Abdel Aziz Khalid was the visible leader of the SNA, although Amir Babakr was the SNA chairman. During the 1990s, the Sudan Alliance Forces, the armed wing of the SNA, conducted a number of low-level military attacks against Sudanese forces inside the country. The Sudan Alliance Forces merged with the Sudan People's Liberation Army in 2002. Subsequently, the SNA joined the political process in Khartoum. The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM; ar, حركة العدل والمساواة, ') is an opposition group in Sudan founded by Khalil Ibrahim. Gibril Ibrahim has led the group since January 2012 after the death of Khalil, his brother, in December 2011. JEM's political agenda includes issues such as: radical and comprehensive constitutional reform to grant Sudan's regions a greater share of power in ruling the country (one point of this is a rotating presidency), the replacement of social injustice and political tyranny with justice and equality, and basic services for every Sudanese. Darfur Joint Protection Force
The Darfur Joint Protection Force, or more simply the Joint Darfur Force/Joint Force, is a formerly defensive force that was set up during the Battle of El Fasher claiming to neutrally protect civilians during the War in Sudan (2023) by peacekeeping. It was formed on 27 April 2023 by four former rebel groups and signatures of the Juba peace agreement. The participating groups are SLM-Minawi, the Justice and Equality Movement, the Sudanese Alliance, and the Gathering of Sudan Liberation Forces. It is currently led by Darfur Region Governor Minni Minnawi. The Joint Force has been criticised for its incompetence in ensuring the safety of civilians across Darfur.
