Football Club Groningen () is a Dutch professional association football club based in Groningen, province of Groningen. Founded on 16 June 1971 as the successor of GVAV, the team compete in the Eredivisie, the highest tier of Dutch football. The Vierde Divisie, formerly known as Hoofdklasse () is the second-highest league of amateur football in the Netherlands, and the fifth tier in general. Background The league is divided into two sections: Saturday and Sunday. This is a result of the traditional pillarisation ( nl, verzuiling), the segregation of Dutch society. Kurt Elshot (born 3 July 1977) is a Dutch former professional footballer. He usually played as a defender in a right back position. He has formerly played for FC Groningen and NAC Breda. Club career Youth Elshot was born in Paramaribo, Suriname. As a youth, he moved to Geleen, a town in Limburg, the Netherlands. At age six, he moved to Groningen in the northern part of the country, and this was also where he started his footballing career, at local amateur side SC Gronitas. Martin Drent (born 31 March 1970) is a Dutch former professional footballer who played as a forward for SC Veendam, FC Emmen and FC Groningen. Playing career A big target man, Martin Drent started his career at amateur club GVAV-Rapiditas in 1991. SC Cambuur, also known as Cambuur Leeuwarden, or simply Cambuur, () is a Dutch football club from the city of Leeuwarden formed on 19 June 1964.
