Danjiangkou Dam
The Danjiangkou Dam () is a concrete gravity dam on the Han river near Danjiangkou in Hubei Province, China. The original dam was constructed between 1958 and 1973. The dam creates a large Danjiangkou Reservoir. In the 21st century, the Danjiangkou Dam became part of the South-North Water Transfer Project. In 2005-2009, its height was raised in order to increase the reservoir's capacity. Heightening Originally, the dam was tall and long. Since its heightening, the dam is now tall and long. The original crest elevation was and is now . The increase in height will add to the reservoir's capacity bring it to . Currently, the reservoir has a capacity of . Danjiangkou () is a county-level city in northwestern Hubei, China, bordering Henan province to the northeast. The city spans an area of 3,121 square kilometers, and has a population of approximately 478,000 as of 2017. Etymology Danjiangkou translates to the mouth () of the Dan River (). Han River (Hanshui)

A gravity dam is a dam constructed from concrete or stone masonry and designed to hold back water by using only the weight of the material and its resistance against the foundation to oppose the horizontal pressure of water pushing against it. Dams and reservoirs in China are numerous and have had a profound effect on the country's development and people. According to the World Commission on Dams in 2000, there were 22,104 dams over the height of operating in China. Hydroelectricity, or hydroelectric power, is electricity generated from hydropower (water power). Hydropower supplies one sixth of the world's electricity, almost 4500 TWh in 2020, which is more than all other renewable sources combined and also more than nuclear power. Hydropower can provide large amounts of low-carbon electricity on demand, making it a key element for creating secure and clean electricity supply systems.
