Daniels, Maryland
Daniels is a ghost town straddling the Patapsco River east of Woodstock and north of Old Ellicott City in Baltimore and Howard counties, Maryland, United States. It is the location of the Daniels Mill, a site listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Daniels is the home town of former Howard County Executive and State Senator James N. Robey. A postal office operated in the community from 1 March 1943 to 31 August 1971. History The original settlement that would become the town of Daniels formed in 1810, when the family of Thomas Ely came to the area and built a textile mill. The community around the mill was known as Elysville. In 1853, the town was purchased by the family of James S. Gary and renamed to Alberton in honor of James' son Albert. The factory remained with the Gary family until 1940, when the Daniels Company bought the town and changed its name to Daniels. Hurricane Agnes
Hurricane Agnes in 1972 was the costliest hurricane to hit the United States at the time, causing an estimated $2.1 billion in damage. The hurricane's death toll was 128. The effects of Agnes were widespread, from the Caribbean to Canada, with much of the east coast of the United States affected. Alberton, Maryland
Alberton is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. A postal office operated in the community from 3 February 1854 to 1 March 1943. Alberton was the site of a large cotton mill along the Patapsco River, founded by James S. Gary after moving from Connecticut in 1839. A store and seventy company buildings for workers were built on 820 acres around the factory. The mill used adult and child labor, including Gary's son, James Albert Gary. In 1866 and 1868, the mill was damaged by flooding, which Gary survived by floating with his daughter on a log. In 1870, James Albert Gary inherited the mill and the town named after him, "Alberton". In 1885, his son, E. Stanley Gary took over the mill, which operated 228 looms and 8–9,000 spindles. Elysville, Maryland
Elysville is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. A postal stop operated between February 22, 1834, and February 3, 1854. Industry A quarry was constructed on the north side of the Patapsco river in the "Limestone Valley". Joseph Evans and Anne Ellicott settled the site building a small mill in the late 18th century. The Elysville Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1829, by Thomas Ely to manufacture cotton textiles. A mill was built on the northern side of the river at Ben's Branch. In 1831, railroad construction of the B&O started through the area. Ely purchased the Evans property on his death in 1833, with a location on Southern shore. The mill was funded by $25,000 in stock sales in July 1845 and erected between August 1845 and the spring of 1846.
