Damien Smith (football Coach)
Damien Smith is a former coach of Broadmeadow Magic FC, a semi-professional side based in Newcastle, Australia and currently playing in the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW. He coached at Broadmeadow across two tenures. The first ran from 2002 to 2007 in which he won the minor premiership in 2003 and 2005. In 2004 and 2005, Smith won the grand final with Magic across back to back seasons. Smith left Broadmeadow at the end of 2007 and returned in 2010 to replace then coach Peter McGuinness. On his return Smith worked alongside Robert Virgili in a dual coaching role, until taking over the head coaching role by himself in 2011, with Virgili as assistant. His first season back in charge in 2010, didn't go as planned with Magic failing to make the finals, and finishing back in sixth in the then eight team competition. Damien Francis Smith is a former New Zealand politician. He was a Member of Parliament for ACT New Zealand from 2020 until 2023. Early life and career Smith was born in Northern Ireland and grew up in Enniskillen during The Troubles. His parents were Frank and Agnes; he is one of four siblings. His early career was in corporate sales in the fast-moving consumer goods industry, in banking, and in governance and advisory. He came to New Zealand in 2002. He previously worked for Virgin Group and ASB Bank, and runs his own consulting business. He lives in Auckland and has one daughter. Political career During the 2020 New Zealand general election, first-time candidate Smith contested the Botany electorate for the ACT Party, where he came third. A versatile outside back, he primarily played . Background A Moree Boars junior, Smith attended Ipswich Grammar School before being signed by the St George Dragons. Playing career In Round 21 of the 1995 ARL season, Smith made his first grade debut in St George's 50–14 win over the North Queensland Cowboys. In Round 2 of the 1996 ARL season, Smith scored his first try in a 16–24 loss to the Cronulla Sharks. That season, Smith played 10 games for the Dragons in their run to the Grand Final.
