Damien Smith (journalist)
Damien Smith is a former reporter for ''Seven News'' in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Smith is the law reporter, and among the longest serving legal affairs journalists. Smith joined Sydney's ''Seven News'' in 1997. While working for ''Seven News'', he has reported on many cases, including the trials of Rene Rivkin, Kathleen Folbigg and Edward Lee. While reporting, Smith attends many Police Corruption inquiries. During Seven's coverage of the 11 September terrorist attacks, he reported from Washington, D.C. and New York City. Rene Rivkin
Rene Walter Rivkin (6 June 1944 – 1 May 2005) was a Chinese-born Australian entrepreneur, investor, investment adviser, and stockbroker. He was convicted of insider trading in 2003 and sentenced to nine months of periodic detention. Early life Rene Walter Rivkin was born 6 June 1944 in Shanghai in what was then Japanese-occupied China, to Russian-Jewish parents. His father, Walter, was a Georgian-born trader who had fled to China in the 1920s to escape the Bolsheviks. The elder Rivkin had also once been a champion boxer in Shanghai. The family emigrated to Australia in 1951. Rivkin attended the selective Sydney Boys High School in Moore Park. In accordance with his father's wishes, he studied law at the University of Sydney. Kathleen Folbigg
Kathleen Megan Folbigg (Married and maiden names, née Donovan; born 14 June 1967) is an Australian woman convicted in 2003 for killing her four infant children. She was pardoned twenty years later due to serious doubts that had arisen about her guilt. No direct evidence of the imputed crimes was ever found, but in the personal diary discovered by her husband and dutifully handed over to the police, several entries seemed to suggest she might have harmed, and indeed murdered, her children. She was arrested in 2001 and convicted in 2003, sentenced to 40 years with a non-parole period of 30 years. Kathleen Folbigg maintained her innocence, however, claiming the four children had died from natural causes. Scientific and medical research suggesting the daughters might indeed have died of natural causes was rejected by a judicial inquiry in 2019.
