In Indian cuisine, ''dal'' (also spelled ''daal'' or ''dhal'' in English; pronunciation: , Hindi: दाल, Urdu: ), ''paruppu'' ( ta, பருப்பு), or ''pappu'' ( te, పప్పు) are dried, split pulses (e.g., lentils, peas, and beans) that do not require soaking before cooking. Arthur Berriedale Keith (5 April 1879 – 6 October 1944) was a Scottish constitutional lawyer, scholar of Sanskrit and Indologist.
