Daan De Lange
Daan Jacobus Siegfried de Lange (4 August 1915 – 29 May 1988) was a Dutch origin Norwegian chess player, Norwegian Chess Championship winner (1960). Biography Daan de Lange was born in the Netherlands. In his youth, he was professionally involved in football - for some time Daan de Lange played in Ajax. He also studied music. During the German occupation he lived in England. Daan de Lange served in the music division of the United States Army. After the World War II he returned to the Netherlands. In the mid 1950s Daan de Lange moved to Norway. He lived in Stavanger, then in Hamar. Daan de Lange earned playing the piano. For two decades, he was one of the leading Norwegian chess players. Daan de Lange won Norwegian Chess Championship in 1960. Großenbrode
Großenbrode is a municipality in the district of Ostholstein, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated on the Baltic Sea coast, opposite Fehmarn, approx. 8 km (5 mi) east of Heiligenhafen. Until 1963 it had a ferry connection to Gedser in Denmark. After World War II there was no ferry connection from West Germany to Denmark - the ferry port Warnemünde (near Rostock) now being in the communist east. Großenbrode was chosen as the site for a temporary ferry connection for the 3 hour crossing to Gedser. After the Fehmarnsund bridge was built in 1963, the ferryport moved to Puttgarden on Fehmarn. Großenbrode is planned to be the site of a portal of the Fehmarn Sound Tunnel by 2028. The Clare Benedict Cup was a chess tournament for national teams from Western and Northern Europe, which took place 23 times from 1953 to 1979. Overview and History Foundation Clare Benedict (1871–1961), author and patron, was originally from Cleveland, Ohio, but moved to Switzerland in 1945, where she founded the tournament. She was a distant relative of author James Fenimore Cooper. 19th Chess Olympiad
The 19th Chess Olympiad (german: Die 19. Schacholympiade), comprising an open team tournament as well as the annual FIDE congress, took place between September 5–27, 1970, in Siegen, West Germany. The Soviet team with six Grandmasters, led by world champion Boris Spassky, lived up to expectations and won their tenth consecutive gold medal, although only by a single point, with Hungary and Yugoslavia taking the silver and bronze, respectively. Tournament report Held at the Siegerland Hall venue, a total of 64 nations applied to enter the tournament. Unfortunately, space constraints and FIDE's intended model format meant that only 60 could be accommodated. It was then found that four teams were to have their applications rejected on the grounds that they had missed the deadline. These four teams were: Argentina, France, Ecuador, and Venezuela.
