Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway (DW&WR) 13 was an 0-6-0 goods locomotive built in 1904 at Grand Canal Street railway works and was followed by four more of the same class, two being contracted to Beyer, Peacock and Company. Design These followed on from the 0-6-0s Nos. 17 and 36 built around the turn of the century but were more powerful and standardised. The first engine, No. 13 (''Waterford'') in 1904, and the last engine, No. 18 (''Limerick'') in 1910, both had large sliding cab sheets. The engines constructed in 1905, No. 14 (''Enniscorthy'') and the Beyer-Peacock pair Nos. 65 and 66 (''Cork'' and ''Dublin'') had large sliding cab windows. No. 18 which was constructed last after a gap in 1910 included some parts from the earlier 4-2-0 No. 18. Grand Canal Street Railway Works
Grand Canal Street railway works, also known as ''The Factory'', served the Dublin and Kingstown Railway (D&KR), its successors the Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway (DW&WR) and the Dublin and South Eastern Railway (DSER). It was preceded by a small "engine hospital" maintenance depot at Serpentine Avenue. History The D&KR had initially set up an "Engine Hospital" for the servicing of locomotives at Serpentine Avenue, about south west of past the River Dodder where railway cottages were subsequently built. The Serpentine depot had two sections, one for the three engines from Sharp, Stewart and Company, Robert Sharps, initially supported by their engineer Francis Wrigley, and the three from George Forrester and Company, Forresters supported by their man Alexander Allan (locomotive engineer), Alexander Allan. DSER 15 And 16
The Dublin and South Eastern Railway 15 and 16 were a pair of 2-6-0 steam locomotives which were built for the heavy goods (freight) traffic on the Dublin to Wexford main line of the Dublin and South Eastern Railway (DSER). The two locomotives were built by Beyer, Peacock and Company at their Gorton Foundry in Manchester. On account of the risk of damage when new (during the Irish Civil War period of 1921–1922), both examples were initially sent to Belfast for safekeeping. They were stored by the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) at Adelaide yard until 1923, when they were returned to the DSER. The locos were withdrawn in the early 1960s. CIE 201 Class
The Córas Iompair Éireann 201 Class was a class of 34 diesel electric locomotives manufactured by Metropolitan-Vickers at their Dukinfield Works in Manchester. They were a smaller, lighter and less powerful version of the 001 Class and were originally intended for branch line passenger and freight (mixed traffic) duties. They were introduced in 1956 and, although their duties changed over the years, were in regular service on the Irish railway network until the mid-1980s. The Córas Iompair Éireann 001 Class locomotive was manufactured by Metropolitan-Vickers at their Dukinfield Works in Manchester. The 001 Class locomotive was the backbone of mainline passenger and freight train services on the Irish railway network for forty years from 1955 until the mid-1990s when they were replaced by the new 201 Class. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, represents the wheel arrangement of two leading wheels on one axle, usually in a leading truck, six powered and coupled driving wheels on three axles and no trailing wheels. In rail terminology, a railway turntable or wheelhouse is a device for turning railway rolling stock, usually locomotives, so that they can be moved back in the direction from which they came. GS&WR Class 101
The GS&WR Class 101, classified as Class 101 or Class J15 by the Great Southern Railways, was a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotives designed for working goods traffic although they did, and were quite capable of, working branch and secondary passenger trains. Beyer, Peacock And Company
Beyer, Peacock and Company was an English railway locomotive manufacturer with a factory in Openshaw, Manchester. Founded by Charles Beyer, Richard Peacock and Henry Robertson, it traded from 1854 until 1966. The company exported locomotives, and machine tools to service them, throughout the world. Founders German-born Charles Beyer had undertaken engineering training related to cotton milling in Dresden before moving to England in 1831 aged 21. He secured employment as a draughtsman at Sharp, Roberts and Company's Atlas works in central Manchester, which manufactured cotton mill machinery and had just started building locomotives for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. There he was mentored by head engineer and prolific inventor of cotton mill machinery, Richard Roberts. DWWR 15
Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway (DW&WR) 15 of 1860 was the first of a number of 0-4-2 tender locomotives built by Sharp Stewart who were the only supplier of the 0-4-2 type to the DW&WR. In total 12 were supplied in batches in 1860, 1864 and 1876. Locomotives other than Nos. 15, 16 and possibly 37 differed, being about two tons heavier with cylinders, driving wheels of and other differences giving a tractive effort of . The 0-4-2 was considered a mixed-traffic type. In practice the DW&WR mostly employed the locomotives with the higher tractive effort on main line freight and the others on mixed passenger/freight trains.
