DKW Munga
The DKW Munga is a DKW-branded off-road vehicle that was built by Auto-Union in Ingolstadt, Germany. The name ''Munga'' comes from the German phrase ''Mehrzweck Universal Geländewagen mit Allradantrieb'', which translates as "multi-purpose universal off-road car with all-wheel drive" Development Production began in October 1956 and ended in December 1968. During this time 46,750 cars were built. The 38th International Motor Show at Frankfurt in the autumn 1957 was a great success for Auto-Union. About this time the Munga was launched. The vehicle, which has extraordinary stamina, was not only adopted by the West German ''Bundeswehr'' as a vehicle unique in its class but was also bought in large numbers for the German Border Police and various foreign military formations within NATO. Europa Jeep
The Europa Jeep was a multinational military vehicle project that was ultimately abandoned before it could enter production. During the 1960s, several European governments began cooperating on development of a vehicle known as the Europa Jeep, a lightweight, amphibious four wheel drive vehicle that could be mass-produced for use by various national military and government groups. Development of the vehicle proved time-consuming, however, and by 1979 the project had been abandoned. The West German government was in need of a limited number of light, inexpensive, durable transport vehicles that could fulfill their basic needs while the Europa Jeep was being developed and put into production. The XR311 was a prototype military vehicle of US origin that was procured in limited numbers during the 1970s. The Porsche 597 ''Jagdwagen'' (roughly translated as "hunting car") is a light military vehicle, designed to fill the same general role as the Jeep, Kübelwagen and Land-Rover. Originally developed as a prototype for a tender to the German Army after World War II, the car never reached mass production after the DKW Munga was chosen over it for reasons of economics. The car was propelled by an induced air-cooled flat-four taken from the Porsche 356, located in the rear of the vehicle like the VWs and Porsches of the period; first in an amended version of the 1.5 litre, with a later bump to 1.6 in the l-model.
