DIVEDCO
The Puerto Rican Division of Community Education (Spanish: ''División de Educación de la Comunidad'', DIVEDCO) was an agency established in 1949 with the purpose of producing cultural materials for public education on the island of Puerto Rico. Local writers, artists, community organizers, filmmakers and musicians were employed by DIVEDCO to create works and programs in their respective fields on topics of public interest such as literacy, health care, democracy and civic engagement. The agency was a product of the Popular Democratic Party of Puerto Rico under Luis Muñoz Marín following the party’s rise to power during the 1948 elections. Rural and poor citizens with limited access to public resources were the primary target audience of DIVEDCO, although their cultural products had widespread impact on Puerto Rican society and culture broadly. Isabel Bernal
Isabel Bernal (b. San Sebastián, Puerto Rico, 1935) is a Puerto Rican artist. She is known for her silkscreen prints and paintings, and her works are held in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Museo del Barrio, and the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico. She is among the generation of Puerto Rican visual artists fostered by and associated with the Puerto Rican Division of Community Education and is among the artists associated with the tradition of post-war poster art in Puerto Rico. Lorenzo Homar
Lorenzo Homar Gelabert (September 10, 1913 – February 16, 2004) was a Puerto Rican printmaker, painter, and calligrapher whose artwork stretches to three main workshops: (CPA), DIVEDCO (), and the of the (ICP). Homar was also the designer of the logo of the (Institute of Puerto Rican Culture). Early years Lorenzo Homar was born in 1913 in Barrio Puerta de Tierra in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His father, Lorenzo Homar Sr., was a film promoter and his mother, Margarita Gelabert, a pianist. Although he attended grammar school in San Juan, in 1928 due to financial difficulties, his family is forced to move to New York City. Amílcar Tirado
Amílcar Tirado (April 9, 1922 - January 24, 2004) was a Puerto Rican filmmaker active primarily during the 1950s and 1960s. Working for the Puerto Rican Division of Community Education in the Audiovisual Department, Tirado created socially-minded films, often using local jíbaros as actors. Biography Amílcar Tirado was born in Coamo, Puerto Rico. Served in the United States Army during the World War II era. He received a bachelor's degree in theater from the University of Puerto Rico in 1944 and a master's degree in theater directing from Yale University in 1945. Rafael Tufiño
Rafael Tufiño Figueroa (October 30, 1922 – March 13, 2008) was a Puerto Rican painter, printmaker and cultural figure in Puerto Rico, known locally as the "Painter of the People". Early life Rafael Tufiño Figueroa was born on October 30, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York where he lived with his parents, Gregoria Figueroa and Agustín Tufiño, until he was ten years old. In 1932, he moved to Puerta de Tierra, the neighborhood located just outside Old San Juan, to live with his grandmother. At the age of 12, he began to work in the workshop of Antonio "Tony" Maldonado, where he painted signs and letters. Tufiño served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946.
