The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is a United States Department of Defense (DoD) organization founded to help the U.S. military make faster use of emerging commercial technologies. Launched in 2015, the organization has been called "the Pentagon's Innovation Experiment". DIU is staffed by civilian and both active duty and reserve military personnel. The organization is headquartered in Mountain View, California — Silicon Valley — with offices in Boston, Austin, Chicago, and the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C. Maynard Holliday
Maynard Ansley Holliday is the Director of Defense Research and Engineering for Modernization at The Pentagon. He previously worked under Barack Obama, during which time he launched the Defense Innovation Unit. Holliday was Project Manager for Pioneer, a robot which helped to map the inside for the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Early life and education Holliday was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He watched Star Trek as a child, and wanted to become an astronaut. He grew up in Scarsdale, New York. Holliday studied mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, where he was one of only fifteen African American engineers in his class. During his studies he became interested in robotics, as the nuclear meltdown at Three Mile Island resulted in the launch of a Carnegie Mellon spin off company called RedZone Robotics, with Red Whittaker as the Chief Scientist. Defense Innovation Advisory Board
The Defense Innovation Board is an independent advisory board set up in 2016 to bring the technological innovation and best practice of Silicon Valley to the U.S. Military. It is governed by the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) and provides independent recommendations to the United States Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Defense. The board consists of experts from across commercial sector, research, and academia. The Board was founded to bring innovative best practices in technology, workforce, and organizational structure to the United States Department of Defense, Department of Defense.
