DEMOS (Montenegro)
DEMOS (acronym of Demokratski savez, ; cnr, Демократски савез, ДЕМОС) is a centrist to centre-right political party in Montenegro. Party founder and current leader is Miodrag Lekić, who is also serving as the party's single MP in the Parliament of Montenegro. History Party was founded in 2015 when Miodrag Lekić, leader of the opposition Democratic Front, split from the alliance due to disagreements with its constituent parties, and formed the new moderate right political subject. In September 2016, DEMOS decided to enter the Key Coalition with URA and SNP in order to participate at the forthcoming parliamentary election, winning four parliamentary seats. In the summer of 2017 a rift occurred within the party, which resulted in a split, with a conservative faction led by Goran Danilović and Goran Radonjić deciding to form a new party, called United Montenegro. Miodrag Lekić
Miodrag Lekić (; born 21 November 1947) is a Montenegrin political scientist, diplomat and politician. He is the founder and current president of the liberal conservative Democratic Alliance (DEMOS). Biography Early academic and political career Lekić studied political science with focus on international relations at the University of Belgrade, graduating in 1971. He worked as a professor at "Niko Rolović" gymnasium and was a director of cultural and informative center in his hometown of Bar. Key Coalition
The Key Coalition ( cnr, Коалиција Кључ / ''Koalicija Ključ'') was an opposition political alliance in Montenegro. It was composed of the Democratic Alliance (DEMOS), Socialist People's Party (SNP) and United Reform Action (URA). The main goal of the coalition was to overthrow the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS) of Milo Đukanović, which has been in power since 1991. 2018 Montenegrin Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Montenegro on 15 April 2018. Former Prime Minister Milo Đukanović, leader of the ruling DPS was elected as new President of Montenegro in the first round. Electoral system The president is elected using the two-round system; if no candidate receives a majority of the vote in the first round, a run-off is held two weeks later. In order to submit their candidacy to the State Electoral Commission, potential candidates needed to collect 7,993 signatures. President is elected every five years, and only is eligible for two terms. 2012 Montenegrin Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Montenegro on 14 October 2012. The parliamentary elections were the ninth since the reintroduction of multi-party system in 1990, and the third since regaining full independence in 2006. The result was a victory for the ruling European Montenegro alliance (based around the Democratic Party of Socialists) led by Milo Đukanović, which won 39 of the 81 seats, remaining without the majority by itself for the first time since the 2001 election, and subsequently forming a majority coalition government with the ethnic minority Bosniak Party (BS) and Croatian Civic Initiative (HGI) parties. 2020 Montenegrin Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Montenegro on 30 August 2020. They were the fifth parliamentary in Montenegro since gaining its independence in 2006. Eighty-one members of the Montenegrin parliament were elected. Elections were organized in special conditions, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Montenegro. The parliamentary election was also held simultaneously with the local elections in five municipalities. The period before the election was marked by the high polarization of the electorate. Several corruption scandals of the ruling party triggered 2019 anti-government protests, while a controversial religion law sparked another wave of protests. United Montenegro (, UCG) is a conservative political party in Montenegro. Party founder and de facto political leader is Goran Danilović, former Minister of Interior Affairs in Government of Montenegro. Goran Danilović (Serbian Cyrillic: Горан Даниловић, born in 1971 in Podgorica) is a Montenegrin politician, former member of Parliament of Montenegro and former Minister of Internal Affairs. In 2016 he was the founder and was named the first president of the conservative political party called United Montenegro.
