The Czech Athletics Federation (Czech language, Czech: ''Český atletický svaz'', abbreviated ČAS) is the governing body for the sport of Athletics (sport), athletics in the Czech Republic. Its president since 2009 is . History The history of ČAS dates back to 1897 when ''Česká amatérská atletická unie'' (ČAAU, Czech Amateur Athletic Union) was founded. It originally covered wide range of sports including Association Football, football, skiing or tennis but with the gradual establishment of separate organizations for these sports only athletics remained under ČAAU after 1911. Women's athletics, originally governed by Team handball, handball federation was incorporated into ČAAU in 1928. Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and racewalking. The results of racing events are decided by finishing position (or time, where measured), while the jumps and throws are won by the athlete that achieves the highest or furthest measurement from a series of attempts. From the Communist coup d'état in February 1948 to the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Czechoslovakia was ruled by the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia ( cs, Komunistická strana Československa, ''KSČ'').
