Curling At The 2018 Winter Olympics – Qualification Event
The Olympic qualifying event was held from 5–10 December 2017 in Plzeň, Czech Republic. The qualification event was open to any nations that earned qualification points at the 2016 or 2017 World Curling Championships or participated at the 2014 or 2015 World Curling Championships (the Czech men's team, the Norway & the Latvia women's team). The top two teams from the qualification event qualified their nations to participate in the Olympics. Competition format In both the men's and the women's tournaments, the teams played a single round robin, and at its conclusion, the top three teams advanced to the playoffs. In the playoffs, the first and second seeds played a game to determine the first team to advance to the main Olympic tournament. The loser of this game, along with the third seed, played a game to determine the second team to advance to the main Olympic tournament. Jindřich Kitzberger
Jindřich Kitzberger (born 13 April 1981) is a Czech curler. He currently throws lead stones for the Jiří Snítil rink. As a junior curler, Kitzberger played in two World Junior Curling Championships. He played in the 1999 World Junior Curling Championships where he threw second stones for Vit Nekovarik. The team finished in 9th place. The team returned the following year, and at the 2000 World Junior Curling Championships they had a worse showing, finishing last, in 10th place. This finish relegated the Czech Republic to the World Juniors B Pool, and Kitzberger would not return to the main event. In 2003, he joined the Jirí Snítil rink as the team's third, and he played in his first European Curling Championships, where the rink finished in 15th. Martin Snítil
Martin Snítil (born 20 November 1978) is a Czech curler. He currently plays second on a team skipped by his brother, Jiří. Snítil made his international curling debut at the 2003 European Curling Championships, having coached the Czech men's team the previous season. Martin played second on the Czech team, skipped by his brother Jiří, and they finished 15th. The team returned to the European Championships in 2006, this time with Martin playing third on the team. At the 2006 European Curling Championships, they finished 11th. They improved the following season; at the 2007 European Curling Championships, they finish in 8th place, qualifying themselves for the 2008 World Men's Curling Championship- the first Czech team to qualify for the Worlds. Lukáš Klíma (curler)
Lukáš Klíma (born 19 February 1991) is a Czech curler. Klíma skipped the Czech junior team at two World Junior Curling Championships. At the 2011 World Junior Curling Championships he led teammates Marek Cernovsky, Samuel Mokris and Karel Klima to a 9th-place finish (2-8 record). At the 2012 World Junior Curling Championships, he led Cernovsky, Jan Zelingr and Mokris to an 8th-place finish (2-7 record). The highlight of his junior career came at the 2011 Winter Universiade. There, he led his team of Jiri Candra, Tomáš Paul and David Jirounek to a bronze medal. After posting a 6-3 round robin record, the team beat Canada in a tie breaker, then lost to Korea in the semifinal, before beating Great Britain to claim the bronze. Jiří Snítil (born 24 February 1975) is a curler from the Czech Republic. He currently skips the Czech Republic national team. He started curling at the age of 21. Snítil has represented the Czech Republic in seven World Curling Championships (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015). His best placing so far at a world championship was 7th in 2014. Zang Jialiang (; born January 12, 1988, in Harbin, Heilongjiang) is a Chinese curler who trains in Harbin. He made his world championship debut at the 2008 Grand Forks World Championships. Team China achieved their best result to date. In the round robin portion they achieved upset wins over Team Canada and Team Norway. They would finish in third after the round robin and for the first time a men's team from the Pacific region would qualify for the Playoffs. Jiang Dongxu (; born March 3, 1993) is a Chinese curler from Harbin. He represented China at the 2022 Winter Olympics as the alternate on the Chinese men's team skipped by Ma Xiuyue. He also won a silver medal at the 2018 Pacific-Asia Curling Championships. Career Jiang represented China twice at the World Junior Curling Championships in 2012 and 2013. Liu Rui
Liu Rui (; born March 13, 1982 in Harbin, Heilongjiang; sometimes known as Rui Lui) is a Chinese curler. He was the skip of the Chinese men's Olympic Curling Team at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Liu played in his first World Curling Championships in 2008, playing third for Fengchun Wang. The team lost in the bronze medal game to Norway, settling for fourth place. After a slow start in the 2009 Ford World Men's Curling Championship, Liu switched to throw 4th stones while skip Fengchun Wang continued to call the game and throw 3rd stones. World Curling Federation
The World Curling Federation (WCF) is the world governing body for curling accreditation, with offices in Perth, Scotland. It was formed out of the International Curling Federation (ICF), when the push for Olympic Winter Sport status was made. The name was changed in 1990. The ICF was initially formed in 1966 as a committee of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club in Perth after the success of the Scotch Cup series of world championships held between Canada and Scotland. At the outset, it comprised the associations of Scotland, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, and the United States. In the wake of its formation, it sanctioned the World Curling Championships.
