Crosskeys Railway Station
Crosskeys railway station is a station serving the village of Crosskeys in the Caerphilly County Borough in Wales. It is on the Ebbw Valley Railway. The station is situated near the former station site closed in 1962, behind houses on Risca Road and Carlton Terrace. The access to the station is via a one-way system off High Street exiting via Carlton Terrace. Crosskeys is a two-platform station and there is no car park. The station provides good access to the village and Crosskeys College. The station marks the end of the double-track passing loop between Risca and Crosskeys; upon leaving Crosskeys trains enter the single track which extends to the railhead in Ebbw Vale Town. Crosskeys
Crosskeys ( cy, Pont-y-cymer) is a village, community and an electoral ward in Caerphilly county borough in Wales. Etymology The village was originally named Pont-y-cymer and this remains the official Welsh name for the village. The name means ''bridge at the confluence of rivers'', and suggests the area was known as a place to bridge the confluence of the Ebbw and the Sirhowy rivers, long before its urban development in the nineteenth century. The English name is taken from the Cross Keys Inn (now known as the Cross Keys Hotel), The English name appears as ''Crosskeys'' on Ordnance Survey maps, and the railway station also uses this spelling. A passing loop (UK usage) or passing siding (North America) (also called a crossing loop, crossing place, refuge loop or, colloquially, a hole) is a place on a single line railway or tramway, often located at or near a station, where trains or trams travelling in opposite directions can pass each other. Trains/trams going in the same direction can also overtake, provided that the signalling arrangement allows it. A passing loop is double-ended and connected to the main track at both ends, though a dead end siding known as a refuge siding, which is much less convenient, can be used. Crosskeys College
Coleg Gwent - Crosskeys (generally known as Crosskeys College) is the largest campus of Coleg Gwent. It is located next to Risca Road in Crosskeys, near Newport in Wales. The college was previously a technical college and a coal mining college. However, since the demise of heavy industry in the area over the past decades, the college has now become the leading further education establishment in the area. Many of the secondary schools in the area are without a sixth-form and so they feed Crosskeys college with students. Ebbw Valley Railway
The Ebbw Valley Railway ( cy, Rheilffordd Cwm Ebwy) is a branch line of the South Wales Main Line in South Wales. Transport for Wales Rail provides an hourly passenger service each way between Ebbw Vale Town and Cardiff Central, and an hourly service each way between Crosskeys and Newport. The line was opened by the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company and the Great Western Railway (GWR) operated a passenger service from the 1850s between Newport and Ebbw Vale. The line became part of British Railways Western Region in 1948, following the nationalisation of the railways. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1962. However, the route continued to be used to carry freight to and from the Corus steelworks in Ebbw Vale, until its closure in 2002.
