Mount Van Hoevenberg
Mount Van Hoevenberg is a summit point located in the Adirondack Mountains in the Town of North Elba, Essex County, New York, 9 miles (15 km) east-southeast of the village of Lake Placid. Named for Henry Van Hoevenberg (1849–1918) (not to be confused with the American football player Henry Van Hoevenberg), it is best known for the location of the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track, and of a network of cross-country ski trails. The Mount Van Hoevenberg sports complex was used to host the 1932 (bobsleigh) and 1980 Winter Olympics (bobsleigh, luge, cross-country skiing, and biathlon). Harri Kirvesniemi
Harri Tapani Kirvesniemi (born 10 May 1958, in Mikkeli) is a Finnish former cross-country skier who competed from 1980 to 2001. During his career he won six Olympic medals (all bronzes), and also the 50 km event at the Holmenkollen ski festival in 2000. He retired after being caught doping at the 2001 World Championship in Lahti. Career His biggest successes though were at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, where he earned a total of eight medals. This included one gold (15 km: 1989), three silvers (4 × 10 km relay: 1989, 1995. 1997), and four bronzes (15 km: 1982, 30 km: 1985, 4 × 10 km relay: 1982 (shared with East Germany), 1991). In 1998, he earned the Holmenkollen medal (shared with Fred Børre Lundberg, Larissa Lazutina, and Alexey Prokurorov). Galina Kulakova
Galina Alexeyevna Kulakova (russian: Галина Алексеевна Кулакова, born 29 April 1942) is a Soviet former cross-country skier, arguably the best skier on distances shorter than 10 km in the early 1970s. She won four Olympic golds, two individual in 1972 and two relay golds in 1972 and 1976. She was the most successful athlete at the 1972 Winter Olympics, along with Ard Schenk of the Netherlands. Competing in the World Championships, she won three individual golds, two in 1974 and one in 1970, and also two relay golds in those years. Kulakova also won the 10 km event at the Holmenkollen ski festival in 1970 and 1979. Galina Kulakova was also 39 times ''Champion of the USSR'' between 1969 and 1981. Nina Petrovna Rocheva (russian: Нина Петровна Рочева, Selyunina; 13 October 1948 – 8 January 2022) was a Soviet Union, Soviet cross-country skiing (sport), cross-country skier who competed from 1978 to 1980. She won a silver medal in the 4 × 5 km relay at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Rocheva also earned two medals in the 4 × 5 km relay at the world ski championships: gold (under her maiden name Selyunina at the 1974 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, 1974 Championships in Falun, Sweden, and bronze at the 1978 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, 1978 World Championships in Lahti, Finland. Nina Fyodorova
Nina Viktorovna Baldycheva (russian: Нина Викторовна Балдычёва; also known as Baldychova, Fedorova, Baldycheva-Fedorova or Fyodorova; 18 July 1947 – 27 January 2019) was a Russian cross-country skier who competed from 1970 to 1980. She won three medals at the Winter Olympics with a gold in the 4 × 5 km relay (1976), a silver in the 4 × 5 km relay (1980), and a bronze in the 5 km (1976). In the relay in 1976, she injured her left hand in a fall at the start, but completed the race. At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Fyodorova earned two gold (3 × 5 km relay: 1970, 4×5 km: 1974) and one bronze medals (5 km: 1970). Domestically she won one individual Soviet title, over 5 km in 1971, and eight relay titles (1969–73, 1975–76, 1979).
