Crookes
Crookes is a suburb of the City of Sheffield, England, about west of the city centre. It borders Broomhill to the south, Walkley and Crookesmoor to the east and open countryside around the River Rivelin to the north. The population of the ward of the same name was 17,700 at the 2011 Census. Etymology The suburb is said to derive its name from the Old Norse "Krkor" which means a nook or corner of land. Crookes & Crosspool ward—which includes the districts of Crookes, Steelbank, Crosspool, and Sandygate —is one of the 28 electoral wards in City of Sheffield, England. It is located in the western part of the city and covers an area of 3.9 km2. The population of this ward in 2011 was 17,700 people in 7,266 households. The current councillors for Crookes and Crosspool Ward are Minesh Parekh (Labour and Co-operative), Ruth Milsom (Labour), and Tim Huggan (Liberal Democrats). In the 2004 local elections Sylvia Anginotti, John Hesketh, and Brian Holmes, all Liberal Democrats, were returned as councillors for the newly drawn ward. John Hesketh was defeated by Labour's Geoff Smith in 2011. In the 2016 local elections that took place under redrawn boundaries, Labour's Anne Murphy and Craig Gamble-Pugh were returned along with the Liberal Democrats’ Adam Hanrahan. Crookes Cemetery
Crookes Cemetery is a cemetery between Crosspool and Crookes in the city of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Its main entrance is on Headland Road with additional access from Mulehouse Road. It was opened in 1906, and covers . By 2009, over 29,000 burials had taken place since its opening. A central alley runs through the cemetery and separates the consecrated grounds to the north and the unconsecrated grounds to the south. Cemetery chapel The foundation stone for the chapel was laid by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Harry P. Marsh J.P., on Friday 18 September 1908 at 12.30 pm. He was then presented with a silver trowel by the architects Messrs C. and C.M. Hadfield. The building is constructed from locally quarried stone from the Rivelin Valley, while the dressings around the windows, the tracery and doorways are in Bath stone from the Monk's Park quarry in Corsham, Wiltshire. Crookes Valley Park
Crookes Valley Park is an area of public parkland in the Crookesmoor area of the City of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. The park lies just under two kilometres west of the City centre at . It is one of the three “Crookesmoor Parks” the other two being Weston Park and The Ponderosa. History Crookes Valley Park covers an area of approximately 4.8 hectares (11.9 acres), and the majority of the park is taken up by the lake, which was originally a water supply reservoir called the Old Great Dam. It was one of ten reservoirs built in open countryside in the valley between Crookes and Upperthorpe to supply water to the growing City of Sheffield in the 18th century. Crookes is a lunar impact crater that lies on the Moon's far side as seen from the Earth. It lies just to the southwest of the giant crater Korolev. To the southwest of Crookes is McKellar. The rim of this crater has a relatively high albedo compared to most such formations on the Moon, and it lies at the center of a ray system A ray system comprises radial streaks of fine '' ejecta'' thrown out during the formation of an impact crater, looking somewhat like many thin spokes coming from the hub of a wheel. The Crookes
The Crookes were a British indie rock band who formed in Sheffield in 2007. They released their first single "A Collier's Wife" in 2009 as part of the Too Pure singles club, followed by single "Bloodshot Days" that was released on Heist or Hit Records in 2010. Signed to London independent record label Fierce Panda Records, they have subsequently released four albums, '' Chasing After Ghosts'' (2011), '' Hold Fast'' (2012), ''Soapbox'' (2014), and Lucky Ones (2016) along with an extended EP ''Dreams Of Another Day'' (2010). A Crookes tube (also Crookes–Hittorf tube) is an early experimental electrical discharge tube, with partial vacuum, invented by English physicist William Crookes and others around 1869-1875, in which cathode rays, streams of electrons, were discovered. Developed from the earlier Geissler tube, the Crookes tube consists of a partially evacuated glass bulb of various shapes, with two metal electrodes, the cathode and the anode, one at either end. When a high voltage is applied between the electrodes, cathode rays (electrons) are projected in straight lines from the cathode. It was used by Crookes, Johann Hittorf, Julius Plücker, Eugen Goldstein, Heinrich Hertz, Philipp Lenard, Kristian Birkeland and others to discover the properties of cathode rays, culminating in J.J. The Crookes radiometer (also known as a light mill) consists of an airtight glass bulb containing a partial vacuum, with a set of vanes which are mounted on a spindle inside. The vanes rotate when exposed to light, with faster rotation for more intense light, providing a quantitative measurement of electromagnetic radiation intensity. The reason for the rotation was a cause of much scientific debate in the ten years following the invention of the device, but in 1879 the currently accepted explanation for the rotation was published. Today the device is mainly used in physics education as a demonstration of a heat engine run by light energy. It was invented in 1873 by the chemist Sir William Crookes as the by-product of some chemical research.
