Cristina Tembe
Cristina Jeremias Tembe (died 24 June 2017) was a Mozambican independence activist and politician. In 1977 she was one of the first group of women elected to the People's Assembly. Biography During her youth, Tembe was involved with the Igreja Presbiteriana de Moçambique. A student activist, she joined FRELIMO and in 1964 was one of a group that attempted to go into exile in Tanzania to avoid the PIDE. However, she was arrested while travelling through Rhodesia and deported back to Mozambique, where she was detained by the PIDE. She rose to become a member of the party's central committee. Following independence in 1975, she was a FRELIMO candidate in the 1977 parliamentary elections, and was one of the first group of 27 women elected to the People's Assembly. Assembly Of The Republic (Mozambique)
The Assembly of the Republic () is the unicameral legislative body of the Republic of Mozambique established in 1977. The current parliament has 250 members who are directly elected through a system of party-list proportional representation and serve five-year terms. Parties must receive at least five percent of the vote nationally to gain parliamentary representation. Parliamentary debates and business are conducted entirely in Portuguese. Three parties are represented in the parliament: FRELIMO, RENAMO and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique. After the 2014 election, RENAMO MPs have refused to take office, since the party considered the electoral act had been fraudulent, but they resumed their duties in February 2015. Igreja Presbiteriana De Moçambique
Igreja Presbiteriana de Moçambique is one of the largest Protestant denominations of Mozambique. History The Presbyterian Church in Mozambique was started by Mozambicans, who heard the gospel in South Africa. Yosefa Mhalamhala converted to the Reformed faith, and went back to Mozambique in 1880. In 1882 an African church was born. In 1887 the Swiss missionaries joined the African Church and founded the Swiss Mission. Since then it was known as simply the Swiss mission. It has established schools, hospitals and agricultural settings. In 1948 it became independent. It is a Presbyterian church. The denomination was founded by Swiss missionaries especially Paul Bertaud. In the early years the church operated in the provinces of Maputo and Gaza but today it spread across the country. FRELIMO
FRELIMO (; from the Portuguese , ) is a democratic socialist political party in Mozambique. It is the dominant party in Mozambique and has won a majority of the seats in the Assembly of the Republic in every election since the country's first multi-party election in 1994. Founded in 1962, FRELIMO began as a nationalist movement fighting for the self-determination and independence of Mozambique from Portuguese colonial rule. During its anti-colonial struggle, FRELIMO managed to maintain friendly relations with both the Soviet Union and China, and received military and economic assistance from both Moscow and Beijing. Independence was achieved in June 1975 after the Carnation Revolution in Lisbon the previous year. PIDE
The International and State Defense Police ( pt, Polícia Internacional e de Defesa do Estado; PIDE) was a Portuguese security agency that existed during the '' Estado Novo'' regime of António de Oliveira Salazar. Formally, the main roles of the PIDE were the border, immigration and emigration control and internal and external State security. Over time, it came to be known for its secret police activities. The agency that would later become the PIDE was established by the Decree-Law 22992 of August 1933, as the State Surveillance and Defense Police (Polícia de Vigilância e Defesa do Estado) or PVDE. It resulted from the merger of two former agencies, the Portuguese International Police and the Political and Social Defense Police. 1977 Mozambican General Election
General elections were held in Mozambique in 1977. They were the first elections after independence from Portugal, and FRELIMO was the sole legal party. Direct elections were only held for local and city councils, starting on 25 September. These councils then elected members of their local councils to the District Assemblies, which in turn elected representatives to the Provincial Assemblies. FRELIMO produced a single list of shortlisted candidates for the newly created 210-seat People's Assembly, the country's top legislative body. Organization Of Mozambican Women
The Organization of Mozambican Women ( ''OMM'') is the women's section of FRELIMO. Founded in 1973, during the Mozambican War of Independence, in recognition of women's growing roles in the conflict against Portuguese colonialism, the OMM was created as a non-military structure to promote women's education, emancipation and mobilization. Following independence in 1975, the OMM focussed on issues related to women's education, ethnic division, divorce, family planning, amantismo (adultery and promiscuity), prostitution, and alcoholism. In 1990, the OMM voted to separate from FRELIMO, although shortly thereafter, the organization re-affiliated.
