Craigton, Glasgow
Craigton ( gd, Baile Chreig) is a residential suburb in the southwest of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Located approximately from the city centre, it is bordered by Bellahouston Park to the south and Halfway to the west, with Cardonald beyond. The area was historically farming land for Govan, which is nearby to the north across the M8 motorway and Inverclyde Line railway tracks. A pedestrian underpass, previously a road on which city trams operated, leads north from Craigton under the motorway onto Craigton Road, which is within the Drumoyne neighbourhood. Historically the Craigton Road area was occupied by Craigton Farm, while the estate of Craigton House was acquired to build the Craigton neighbourhood (developed for housing between the World Wars, as were Drumoyne and other nearby developments like the contrasting Moorepark and Mosspark projects). Govan (ward)
Govan (Ward 5) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Since its creation in 2007 it has returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system. The ward's size became smaller for the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, but it continued to return four councillors. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Greyhound racing is an organized, competitive sport in which greyhounds are raced around a track. White City Stadium was a greyhound racing and speedway track in Glasgow, Scotland. Greyhound racing Origins The stadium was built on Paisley Road West in Glasgow close to Ibrox Stadium, which was situated to the north-east and even closer to the Albion Greyhound Stadium, which opened the same year and across the road also on the north-east side.
