White City Stadium was a greyhound racing and speedway track in Glasgow, Scotland. Greyhound racing Origins The stadium was built on Paisley Road West in Glasgow close to Ibrox Stadium, which was situated to the north-east and even closer to the Albion Greyhound Stadium, which opened the same year and across the road also on the north-east side. When the stadium opened it was known as the White City Sports stadium and in addition to greyhound racing hosted Speedway and show jumping. Bellahouston Park lay immediately to the south. Opening The first meeting was held during 7 April 1928, the same night that Lythalls Lane Stadium and Clapton Stadium opened to greyhound racing. The track was affiliated to the National Greyhound Racing Society along with fellow Glasgow tracks Albion and Carntyne Stadium. Ibrox () is a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. It is situated south of the River Clyde and is part of the former burgh of Govan. The origin of the name Ibrox is unclear. It is often said to come from the Gaelic ''àth bruic'', meaning "badger ford", but this is unconfirmed. Carntyne Stadium was a multi-sports stadium situated in the Carntyne area of Glasgow, Scotland, used mainly for greyhound racing and speedway. Origins and opening The Carntyne Greyhound Racecourse was situated between the Parkhead and Carntyne areas of Glasgow and opened for greyhound racing on 17 September 1927. The stadium ran along the railway track sandwiched between the railway and Myreside Street and was built on the site of a former running and trotting track. The M8 is the busiest motorway in Scotland and one of the busiest in the United Kingdom. Glasgow Tigers are a motorcycle speedway team from Glasgow, Scotland. Formed in 1928, the club adopted the Tigers nickname in 1946 and compete in the British SGB Championship. Scottish Greyhound Derby
The Scottish Greyhound Derby was an original classic greyhound competition held at Shawfield Stadium. Held at Carntyne Stadium from 1928 to 1968, after the closure of Carntyne the race appeared at Shawfield from 1970 until 1985. In 1988 the Greyhound Racing Association (GRA), moved the race to Powderhall Stadium in Edinburgh because they had the rights to the event and wanted it to take place at one of their tracks. After just two years it returned to Glasgow and Shawfield following the sale of Powderhall by the GRA. The Clapton Stadium, also known as Millfields Road, was a football ground and greyhound racing stadium in the Lower Clapton area of London. History The stadium was originally named Whittles Athletic Ground and was mostly used for whippet racing. It was built on top of an old fireworks manufactory on the north side of Millfields Road. Craigton ( gd, Baile Chreig) is a residential suburb in the southwest of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Located approximately from the city centre, it is bordered by Bellahouston Park to the south and Halfway to the west, with Cardonald beyond.
