Pollokshields (ward)
Pollokshields (Ward 6) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. On its creation in 2007 and in 2012 it returned three council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed, the ward increased in size and returned four members. Boundaries Located on the South Side of Glasgow, the ward includes Pollokshields itself as well as Crossmyloof, Strathbungo and the western part of Shawlands. The 2017 expansion took in Bellahouston, Craigton and Dumbreck from the Govan ward. Craigton, Glasgow
Craigton ( gd, Baile Chreig) is a residential suburb in the southwest of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Located approximately from the city centre, it is bordered by Bellahouston Park to the south and Halfway to the west, with Cardonald beyond. The area was historically farming land for Govan, which is nearby to the north across the M8 motorway and Inverclyde Line railway tracks. A pedestrian underpass, previously a road on which city trams operated, leads north from Craigton under the motorway onto Craigton Road, which is within the Drumoyne neighbourhood. Historically the Craigton Road area was occupied by Craigton Farm, while the estate of Craigton House was acquired to build the Craigton neighbourhood (developed for housing between the World Wars, as were Drumoyne and other nearby developments like the contrasting Moorepark and Mosspark projects). 2022 Glasgow City Council Election
The 2022 election to the Glasgow City Council took place on 5 May 2022 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. The election used the 23 wards created following the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland's 5th Review, with 85 councillors being elected. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. Similar to the last election in 2017, the Scottish National Party (SNP) won the most seats and formed a minority administration. After the election, the SNP reached a working agreement with the Scottish Greens, reflecting the similar nature to the co-operation agreement in the Scottish Government but the difference being that they would not form part of the administration. Scottish Greens
The Scottish Greens (also known as the Scottish Green Party; gd, Pàrtaidh Uaine na h-Alba ; sco, Scots Green Pairtie) are a green political party in Scotland. The party has seven MSPs in the Scottish Parliament as of May 2021. As of the 2022 local elections, the party sits on 13 of the 32 Scottish local councils, with a total of 35 councillors. They hold two ministerial posts in the third Sturgeon government following a power-sharing agreement with the SNP in August 2021, marking the first time Green party politicians will be in government in the UK. 2012 Glasgow City Council Election
Elections to Glasgow City Council were held on 3 May 2012, the same day as the other Scottish local government elections. The election was the second using 21 new wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, each ward elected three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system form of proportional representation. The election in Glasgow attracted the most attention out of the local elections in Scotland as there were many predictions that the Scottish Labour would lose control of the council due to losses of seats to the Scottish National Party. The Labour administration had suffered from a number of defections of council members to the newly formed Glasgow First party and controversy surrounding Councillor's salaries and contracts. Elections to Glasgow City Council were held on 3 May 2007, the same day as the other 2007 Scottish local elections, Scottish local government elections and the Scottish Parliament 2007 Scottish Parliament election, general election. Govan (Ward 5) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Since its creation in 2007 it has returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system. The ward's size became smaller for the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, but it continued to return four councillors. Boundaries Located south of the River Clyde, as well as central Govan (once a separate burgh which includes the neighbourhoods of Drumoyne, Ibrox, Linthouse and Plantation) the ward also includes the areas of Shieldhall, Cessnock, Kinning Park, Kingston and Tradeston. The boundaries were changed in 2017, with the Bellahouston, Craigton and Dumbreck neighbourhoods south of the Inverclyde Line railway being reassigned to the Pollokshields ward. Bellahouston
Bellahouston ( gd, Baile Ùisdean, sco, Hughstoun) is a district in the southwest of Glasgow. It is bordered by Dumbreck, Ibrox, Pollokshields, Craigton. History Bellahouston Estate in the parish of Govan was purchased in 1726 by James Rowan of Marylands and his family resided there until 1824. Upon the death of Thomas Rowan in that year, the estate passed to a relative by marriage, one Moses Steven of Polmadie. During his lifetime he increased the size of the estate, buying land at Weariston and a house and land at Dumbreck. The whole became known as Bellahouston. Upon the death of Moses in 1871, the Estate passed to his sisters who, according to his wishes, established a trust which would dedicate the estate for 'charitable, religious and educational purposes' within greater Glasgow.
