Coxwold Railway Station
Coxwold railway station was on the Thirsk and Malton line of the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway in North Yorkshire, England that served the village of Coxwold. The station opened on 1 June 1853. The coaches were old passenger vehicles no longer suitable for use in trains, which were converted to ... from 1935 to 1939, and possibly one for some of 1934, the station was also used as an overnight stop for touring camping coach service in 1935. The station closed for regular passenger traffic in 1953 but was subsequently used for occasional special trains until 1958. Coxwold is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England, in the North York Moors National Park. It is 18 miles north of York and is where the Rev. Laurence Sterne wrote '' A Sentimental Journey''. History The village name is derived from Saxon words ''Cuc'', meaning ''cry'', and ''valt'', meaning ''wood''. The village is mentioned in Domesday Book of 1086 as part of the ''Yarlestre'' hundred by the name of ''Cucvalt''. The lord of the manor at the time of the Norman invasion was ''Kofse'' but the manor passed to ''Hugh, son of Baldric'', and thence to Roger de Mowbray. Before 1158 the manor and lands of Coxwold passed to Thomas de Colville. In return for the lands Thomas had to swear allegiance to Roger de Mowbray. Thomas de Colville's estate included the manors of Yearsley, Coxwold and Oulston as well as other properties and land in York, Thirsk, Everley, Nunwick, Kilburn and Upsland. Gilling And Pickering Line
The Gilling and Pickering line (G&P) was a railway line that ran from Gilling to Pickering in North Yorkshire, England. The line was opened in stages between 1871 and 1875 and linked up with the Thirsk and Malton line (T&M) at Gilling and the York and North Midland Railway at Pickering. The line connected the settlements of Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Nawton, Nunnington and Sinnington to others parts of the North Eastern Railway (NER) network. North Eastern Railway (United Kingdom)
The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Its main line survives to the present day as part of the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. Husthwaite Gate Railway Station
Husthwaite Gate railway station is a disused railway station in North Yorkshire, England. It served the nearby village of Husthwaite. When the Thirsk and Malton Line was completed in 1853, there was originally no station near Husthwaite. However, a single platform on the north side of the single line was provided by 1856, east of the crossing with the minor road from Husthwaite to Carlton Husthwaite, known as Elphin Bridge Lane. A stationmaster's house, incorporating the ticket office, was built on the opposite side of the crossing. A goods siding in front of the stationmaster's house was built at the cost of Sir George Wombwell, a local landowner. In 1872, it was taken into public use and Wombwell's outlay was refunded.
