Longview, Washington
Longview is a city in Cowlitz County, Washington, United States. It is the principal city of the Longview, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Cowlitz County. Longview's population was 37,818 at the time of the 2020 census, making it the largest city in Cowlitz County. West Coast League
The West Coast League (WCL) is a collegiate summer baseball wooden bat league founded in 2005, comprising teams from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and Alberta. The WCL was previously named the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League (WCCBL), but in 2008 renamed as the West Coast League. The league is designed to develop college talent, and only current college-eligible players are allowed to participate. The West Coast League has produced dozens of professional players, including a number of major leaguers. League teams are operated similarly to professional minor-league teams. Collegiate Summer Baseball
Collegiate summer baseball leagues are amateur baseball leagues in the United States and Canada featuring players who have attended at least one year of college and have at least one year of athletic eligibility remaining. Generally, they operate from early June to early August. In contrast to college baseball, which allow aluminum or other composite baseball bats, players in these leagues use only wooden bats, hence the common nickname of these leagues as "wood-bat leagues". Collegiate summer leagues allow college baseball players the ability to compete using professional rules and equipment, giving them experience and allowing professional scouts the opportunity to observe players under such conditions. Lower Columbia College
Lower Columbia College (LCC) is a public community college in Longview, Washington. History Lower Columbia College was established in 1934 as Lower Columbia Junior College. Students registered for classes at Korten's Music Store in Longview, Dahlman Hardware in Castle Rock, and the Orr Furniture Store in Kelso. Classes were held at R.A. Long High School. The first class to graduate with an Associate degree was in 1936; the class consisted of seven students. The second class, with ninety-six students, graduated in 1937. As the number of students increased, instruction expanded into the Myklebust building in downtown Longview and the Moose Hall. The Moose Hall continued to house classes until the 1949 Olympia earthquake, when damage caused the building to be condemned. Classes were also held on the first floor of the Longview Public Library. ''The Daily News'' (TDN) is the primary newspaper of Longview and Kelso, Washington, and Cowlitz County, Washington. Lee Enterprises acquired the newspaper in 2002, with its purchase of Howard Publications. Howard, in turn, had purchased the paper in 1999 from Ted Natt and John Natt, grandsons of John M. McClelland Sr., ending 76 years of McClelland-Natt family ownership. According to "R.A. Long's Planned City" by John McClelland Jr., McClelland Sr. purchased the paper, which began as a Long-Bell Lumber Company daily, from Robert A. Long, the lumber magnate and founder of Longview. Gary Van Tol
Gary Van Tol (February 3, 1967) is an American college baseball coach and former player. He is the manager of the Boise Hawks. Van Tol played college baseball at Treasure Valley Community College from 1986 to 1988 before transferring to Gonzaga University where he played for coach Steve Hertz in 1989 and 1990. He served as the head coach at Centralia College from 1994 to 1995 and Treasure Valley Community College from 1997 to 2001. He was the head baseball coach at Boise State (2020). Playing career Van Tol enrolled at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon, and played baseball for the Chukars. After earning an associate degree from TVCC, he transferred to Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. As a senior in 1990, Van Tol was named first team All-Pac-10 Conference North Division.
