Covelo ( ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Mendocino County, California, United States. Covelo is located as the crow flies east-northeast of Laytonville, at an elevation of . The population was 1,394 at the 2020 census, up from 1,255 at the 2010 census. of Covelo is part of the Round Valley Indian Reservation. Geography Covelo is located in northeastern Mendocino County at . It is accessible via California State Route 162, which leads southwest to U.S. Route 101 at Longvale. To the east, Mendocino Pass Road (becoming Alder Springs Road) leads over the mountains of Mendocino National Forest to Elk Creek, for much of its length a gravel road. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Covelo CDP has a total area of , 99.40% of it land and 0.60% of it water. Elk Creek, California
Elk Creek is a census-designated place in Glenn County, California. It is located northwest of Willows, at an elevation of 745 feet (227 m). The 2010 census reported that Elk Creek's population was 163. It is home to the smallest public high school in California, which has an enrollment of about 35 students in grades 7 through 12. The Grindstone Indian Rancheria of Wintun-Wailaki Indians, founded in 1907, is located approximately seven miles north of the town and conducts business in Elk Creek. The best-known landmark nearby is a mountain named Bidwell Point. The first post office at Elk Creek opened in 1872. The town of Elk Creek is just north of Stony Gorge Reservoir. Covelo AVA
The Covelo AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in northern Mendocino County, California. Although the region only has under vine, it was granted AVA status by the United States Department of the Treasury Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau on February 16, 2006, based purely on the unique climate conditions of the area. Jake Claus and William Claus planted the only (CCOF) Vineyards in the Covelo AVA, making them the monopoly of grape Farms/Growers in the AVA. The appellation is located north of Ukiah, California and includes the areas of Round and Williams Valleys. The area is relatively flat terrain built upon deep loam soil layers, the valley floor sits at 1230ft elevation.
