Coryton, Cardiff
Coryton is a district of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, lying immediately to the north of Whitchurch next to junction 32 of the M4 motorway. It is within the Whitchurch & Tongwynlais electoral ward. Coryton House Coryton House is a large Edwardian house built in 1900 for the shipowner and dry-dock owner John Cory (1855–1931), the founder of the shipping company John Cory and Sons and the father of the politician Sir Herbert Cory, 1st Baronet (1857–1933), who also lived in Coryton House. The gardens of Coryton House were expanded in the interwar period and are listed as Grade II on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales. After Sir Herbert's death in 1933 the house became the civil defence headquarters for Cardiff. Offices were built on the part of the garden between the house and Pendwyallt Road, now replaced by housing, and the Village Hotel was built on the kitchen gardens. Media Wales Ltd. is a publishing company based in Cardiff, Wales. As of 2009 it was owned by Reach plc (formerly known as the Trinity Mirror Group). It was previously known as the Western Mail & Echo Ltd. History The ''Western Mail'' was founded in 1869 by the 3rd Marquess of Bute as a Conservative newspaper. In 1893, the original building in St. Mary Street was destroyed by fire and a new building was opened also in St Mary Street two years later. Coryton Line
The Coryton Line is a commuter railway line in Cardiff from the city centre to Heath, Birchgrove, Rhiwbina, Whitchurch and Coryton. It was originally opened as part of the main line of the Cardiff Railway. The line is operated by Transport for Wales as part of the Valley Lines network. TfW replaced the previous franchise, Arriva Trains Wales in October 2018. Rolling stock seen operating the line are normally class 153s, class 150s or even 158s. Services normally continue to Radyr via the City Line and then back towards Coryton. Electrification of the Line On 16 July 2012 plans to electrify the line were announced by the Government as part of a £9.4bn package of investment of the railways in England and Wales. Coryton Railway Station (Cardiff)
Coryton railway station serves Coryton and Pantmawr in Cardiff, Wales. It is the terminus of the Coryton Line north of Cardiff Central via Cardiff Queen Street. Passenger services are provided by Transport for Wales as part of the Valley Lines network. History The station was opened by the Cardiff Railway on 1 March 1911 as ''Coryton Halt''; it was renamed ''Coryton Halt (Glam)'' by the Great Western Railway in 1926, and relocated in 1931. The line beyond here closed to all traffic in 1952. It was proposed for closure in the Beeching Report of 1963, but survived. The station was renamed ''Coryton'' on 5 May 1969. River Taff
The River Taff ( cy, Afon Taf) is a river in Wales. It rises as two rivers in the Brecon Beacons; the Taf Fechan (''little Taff'') and the Taf Fawr (''great Taff'') before becoming one just north of Merthyr Tydfil. Its confluence with the River Severn estuary is in Cardiff. The river supports several species of migratory fish, including salmon, sewin (sea trout), and eel. Course From its confluence at Cefn-coed-y-cymmer, the river flows south, passing several towns. It picks up a few tributaries, such as the River Cynon, River Rhondda, Bargoed Taf and Nant Clydach. It flows through Pontypridd and through to Taff's Well, the site of Wales' only thermal spring. Glamorganshire Canal Local Nature Reserve
The Glamorganshire Canal local nature reserve is a nature reserve in Whitchurch, Cardiff, Wales. Formed in 1967, it comprises a disused section of the Glamorganshire Canal (constructed 1794), the Long Wood (designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest) and an area of the flood plain of the River Taff. The reserve is also known as Forest Farm, and the old farm buildings are used to support the reserve. The water in the canal is relatively clean for an ex-industrial area, and supports several species of waterbirds, including kingfishers and herons. It is one of the few British nest sites of the Eurasian bittern. The Long Wood is chiefly oak and beech, with several trees over 200 years old. In 1992 the reserve was included in the newly declared Forest Farm Country Park which covered approximately .
