Cornelius C. Jadwin
Cornelius Comegys Jadwin (March 27, 1835 – August 17, 1913) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Biography Cornelius Comegys Jadwin was born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. He attended the common schools and taught school for four years. He studied civil engineering and pharmacy. He was engaged as a civil and mining engineer from 1857 to 1861. He entered the drug business and located in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, in 1862. He served on the board of education of his district for nine years and was president for three years. He was a delegate to the 1880 Republican National Convention. Jadwin elected as a Republican to the Forty-seventh Congress. He was an unsuccessful Independent candidate for reelection in 1882. The 47th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, consisting of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1881, to March 4, 1883, during the six months of James Garfield's presidency, and the first year and a half of Chester Arthur's presidency. Glen Dyberry Cemetery is located in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. Description The cemetery, alongside the Dyberry Creek, was granted organization in 1854 and features meandering pathways, hillside plots, and many ornamented burial markers. The cemetery includes a mausoleum built in 1891 and other notable features, making it a local landmark frequented by grave site visitors, walkers, and bicyclists alike. History The Honesdale Cemetery Company was incorporated by prominent Delaware & Hudson Canal Co. officials from an act dated January 26, 1854. Mr. and Mrs. John Torrey sold 18 acres near Dyberry Creek for $2,000 in 1859 for the cemetery and 49 lots were sold during the first sale. The 1882 United States House of Representatives elections were held during President Chester A. Arthur's term. Arthur's Republican Party was badly defeated, losing its majority to the opposition Democratic Party after a campaign that focused on the resistance of Republican leaders to reforming the Spoils system under which government jobs were handed to supporters of winning candidates. After the election, Arthur agreed with the Democrats to pass the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act, establishing a professional civil service. However, his actions were too late, as the image of the Republican Party as corrupt was already engrained in the minds of voters. This election also saw the decline of the pro-paper money Greenback Party, and the pick up of several Virginian seats by the Readjuster Party which promoted fiscal responsibility and shunned elitism, though the Virginia-based Readjuster Party all but disappeared following this election. Garfield of Ohio and Chester A. Arthur of New York as the official Republican Party candidates for president and vice president in the 1880 presidential election.
