Cooper's Island, Bermuda
Cooper's Island is part of the chain which makes up Bermuda. It is located in St. George's Parish, in the northeast of the territory. The 77-acre (31 hectare) island is located in the northeast of Castle Harbor. Due to reclamation work, it is now joined physically to St. David's Island as a southeastern peninsula. For most purposes, it is still considered as though it were a separate island. Its most notable feature is the expanse of Annie's Bay, which stretches along much of the island's east coast. The island has been used by many United States government agencies, having been the property of the US Army, US Air Force and US Navy from 1942, during World War II, to 1995. It also is home to a NASA space tracking station, recently renovated in 2018. Until 1995, access was restricted, but it is now open to the public. Cooper Island
Cooper Island is a small island, long, which lies at the north side of the entrance to Drygalski Fjord, off the southeast end of South Georgia. It was discovered by a British expedition under James Cook in 1775, and named for Lieutenant Robert Palliser Cooper, an officer aboard HMS ''Resolution''. A navigable channel, Cooper Sound, nearly wide, separates Cooper Island from the coast of the main island of South Georgia. There is a small bay, Known as Cooper Bay, southwest of Cape Vahsel on the mainland, and northwest of Cooper Island, indenting the southeast end of South Georgia, which derives its name from Cooper Island. Castle Harbor, Bermuda
Castle Harbour is a large natural harbour in Bermuda. It is located between the northeastern end of the main island and St. David's Island. Originally called ''Southampton Port'', it was renamed as a result of its heavy fortification in the early decades of the Seventeenth century. Geography Castle Harbour is surrounded by St. George's Parish to the north, east, and south, as well as Hamilton Parish to the west. A chain of islands and rocks stretches across the main opening to the Atlantic Ocean, in the east, notably Cooper's Island (which was made a landmass contiguous to St. David's Island and Longbird Island in the 1940s), and Nonsuch Island. Important Bird Area
An Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) is an area identified using an internationally agreed set of criteria as being globally important for the conservation of bird populations. IBA was developed and sites are identified by BirdLife International. There are over 13,000 IBAs worldwide. These sites are small enough to be entirely conserved and differ in their character, habitat or ornithological importance from the surrounding habitat.
