Continental Airlines, Inc.
Continental Airlines, simply known as Continental, was a major United States airline founded in 1934 and eventually headquartered in Houston, Texas. It had ownership interests and brand partnerships with several carriers. Continental started out as one of the smaller carriers in the United States, known for its limited operations under the regulated era that provided very fine, almost fancy, service against the larger majors in important point-to-point markets, the largest of which was Chicago/Los Angeles. However, deregulation in 1978 changed the competitive landscape and realities, as noted by Smithsonian Airline Historian R. E. G. Davies, "Unfortunately, the policies that had been successful for more than forty years under (Robert) Six's cavalier style of management were suddenly laid bare as the cold winds of airline deregulation changed all the rules—specifically, the balance between revenues and expenditures." Continental Airways was a passenger charter airline based in Moscow, Russia. It was established in 1995 and operated out of Sheremetyevo International Airport. History The airline was founded in 1995 as an exclusive cargo airline, operating 3 Tupolev Tu-154s. Its initial base was the Vnukovo International Airport at M. In 2000 it acquired 3 Ilyushin Il-76TDs to increase its routes and expand its destinations. In 2004, they acquired 4 more Tu-154s to start their passenger service, which would make its first flight in 2005. After having financial problems for two years, selling several of his Il-76s and suspending most of their destinations, on July 29, 2011 the Russian Air Safety Agency revoked his permission to fly, and the next day, the airline declared bankruptcy, thus ceasing all its operations. Continental Express was the operating brand name used by a number of independently owned regional airlines providing commuter airliner and regional jet feeder service under agreement with Continental Airlines. Gordon Bethune
Gordon M. Bethune (born August 29, 1941) is a retired US airline executive. He was the CEO of Continental Airlines from 1994 until his retirement at the end of 2004. He formerly served on the boards of Honeywell and Prudential Financial. Bethune was known for ensuring that he received some time as a pilot when taking delivery of a new Continental Airlines Boeing 767 from Boeing and repositioning it from Seattle to Houston. Early life and US Navy service Bethune was born in San Antonio, Texas to Pearl Elley and Jack Bethune, who was serving in the U.S. Army at that time. Bethune grew up in Austin, Texas and spent summers with his father, who owned an aerial crop dusting company in Hernando, Mississippi. Walter Varney
Walter Thomas Varney (December 26, 1888 – January 25, 1967) and Continental Airlines,Continental Airlines WebsiteCompany History 1934 to 1958/ref> which combined under United Continental Holdings long after his death. Jeffery Alan "Jeff" Smisek (born August 17, 1954) is an American businessman and investor who currently serves as the president of GOOSE Capital, on the board of trustees of Rice University and on the board of directors of Finch Therapeutics.
