Compton Limestone
The Compton Limestone is a Formation (geology), geologic formation in southwest Missouri. It preserves brachiopod and echinoderm fossils of the Mississippian (geology), Mississippian Period (geology), subperiod.The Stratigraphic Succession in Missouri, Missouri Geological Survey, Vol. XL 2nd series, 1961, pp 56-57 The Compton rests unconformity, unconformably on the Cotter Formation, Cotter Dolomite of Ordovician age. The Compton was named for the community of Compton, Missouri, as the Stratotype, type sections were described for outcrops along the James River (Missouri), James River and its tributary the Compton Branch. Paleontology In Missouri
Paleontology in Missouri refers to paleontological research occurring within or conducted by people from the U.S. state of Missouri. The geologic column of Missouri spans all of geologic history from the Precambrian to present with the exception of the Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic. Brachiopods are probably the most common fossils in Missouri. During the early Paleozoic, Missouri was covered by a warm shallow sea that would come to be home to creatures like '' Archimedes'', brachiopods, shelled cephalopods, conodonts, corals, crinoids, armored fishes, and trilobites. During the Carboniferous a rich flora developed on land. Primitive tetrapods left behind footprints that would later fossilize. By the end of that period the sea had disappeared from the state. Stratotype
A stratotype or type section in geology is the physical location or outcrop of a particular reference exposure of a stratigraphic sequence or stratigraphic boundary. If the stratigraphic unit is layered, it is called a stratotype, whereas the standard of reference for unlayered rocks is the type locality. Also it can be defined as "The particular sequence of strata chosen as standard of reference of a layered stratigraphic unit." When a stratigraphic unit is nowhere fully exposed, the original type section may be supplemented with reference sections covering the full thickness of the unit. Unconformity
An unconformity is a buried erosional or non-depositional surface separating two rock masses or strata of different ages, indicating that sediment deposition was not continuous. In general, the older layer was exposed to erosion for an interval of time before deposition of the younger layer, but the term is used to describe any break in the sedimentary geologic record. The significance of angular unconformity (see below) was shown by James Hutton, who found examples of Hutton's Unconformity at Jedburgh in 1787 and at Siccar Point in 1788.
