Commando Comics
''Commando For Action and Adventure'', formerly known as ''Commando War Stories in Pictures'', and colloquially known as ''Commando Comics'', is a British comic book magazine that primarily draws its themes and backdrops from the various incidents of the First and Second World Wars. It was first published in July 1961 and is still in print today. It is noted for its distinctive 7 × 5½ inch, 68 page format that became a standard for these kinds of stories. "Commando" has remained more popular than many other British war comics, because of its character based stories and detailed black and white artwork, with only the covers in colour. The stories contain certain characteristic motifs; to mention a few – courage, cowardice, patriotism, dying for the sake of one's country, noble actions, and making a cup of refreshing tea while in the face of danger, enmity turning into friendship when the going gets tough, and so on. Ian Kennedy (comics)
Ian Kennedy (22 September 1932 – 5 February 2022) was a British artist who worked initially for D. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd, then later for Amalgamated Press. Biography Educated at the Clepington Primary School and then at Morgan Academy, both in Dundee, Kennedy was employed after leaving school by D. C. Thomson & Co. He was taken on as a trainee illustrator in their Art Department in 1949. He recalled that his first published work was inking the black squares in the weekly ''Sunday Post'' crossword. In 1953 having become married, Kennedy managed to get work in Amalgamated Press's ''Knockout'' via a local agent. In 1955 he began working for D. C. Thomson again, this time as a freelance artist. During the 1950s Kennedy mainly illustrated war comics such as '' Thriller Picture Library'' and ''Air Ace'' and his work appeared in a range of comics including '' Hotspur'', '' Buster'', and ''The Wizard''. ''Adventures in the Rifle Brigade'' is the name of two Vertigo comic book limited series created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Carlos Ezquerra. The first series, ''Adventures in the Rifle Brigade'', was released in 2000. Its sequel, ''Adventures in the Rifle Brigade: Operation: Bollock'', was released in 2001 and 2002. Plot The Rifle Brigade is a British special forces commando unit commanded by Captain Darcy and staffed with a variety of oddball and at times deviant soldiers from varied British cities and allied nations. The two stories concerns their various covert missions across Europe and Africa and their relevance to the Allied victory. "Operation: Bollock" in particular focused on the team's diplomatic and action-packed attempts to gain for themselves the missing testicle of Adolf Hitler. Action (comic)
''Action'' was a controversial weekly British children's anthology comic that was published by IPC Magazines, starting on 14 February 1976, until November 1977. Concerns over the comic's violent content saw it withdrawn from sale on 16 October 1976. It then reappeared the following month, in a toned-down form, and continued publication until 12 November 1977, at which point it was merged with ''Battle Picture Weekly''. Despite its short lifespan, ''Action'' was highly influential on the British comics scene, and was a direct forerunner of the long-running '' 2000 AD''. Ricardo Garijo
Ricardo Garijo (December 1, 1953 - October 3, 2009) was an Argentinian author, publisher and artist, best known for his long career as a comics writer and artist. Biography Garijo became known outside his homeland in the early 1980s through his work at D. C. Thomson before moving to European publications in the 1990s. Since 1981, his work has gained an international audience in the Scottish war magazine, ''Commando''. He is also co-publisher of his own comic magazine, ''Gurbos,'' which often deals with serious social themes. In 2004, Garijo's first novel, ''El Fuego'' (The Fire) won the Honor's Prize from the Buenos Aires Writer's Society. A year earlier, he painted the politically aware card series, ''Don't Let It Happen Here'' for Monsterwax. ''Starblazer - Space Fiction Adventure in Pictures'' was a British small-format comics anthology in black and white published by D. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd. History The comic book magazine was launched in response to the popularity of science fiction in the 1970s at the cinema and on television. A science fiction comic had first been considered by Ian Chisholm and Jack Smith, editors at DC Thomson, in 1976. A decision was made to launch the comic in September 1978. Smith was the first editor. His successors in the role were Bill Graham and Bill McLoughlin. ''Starblazer'' reached 281 issues, running from April 1979, to 1 January 1991. The Continuation War, also known as the Second Soviet-Finnish War, was a conflict fought by Finland and Nazi Germany against the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1944, as part of World War II.; sv, fortsättningskriget; german: Fortsetzungskrieg.
