Coltfield Platform Railway Station
Coltfield Platform railway station stood on the Burghead and Hopeman Branch of the Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway and later the Highland Railway that once served the rural area of Coltfield and Wards in the Scottish district of Moray (formerly Elginshire). It was opened as Wards railway station in 1862 and was renamed as Coltfield railway station in 1855 before finally becoming Coltfield Platform in 1880. The station lay 2 mi 20 chains (3.6 km) from Alves railway station. History The Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway opened the branch from Alves Junction in 1862. Services ran to Keith or to Inverness by changing at Alves. Burghead
Burghead ( sco, Burgheid or ''The Broch'', gd, Am Broch) is a small town in Moray, Scotland, about north-west of Elgin. The town is mainly built on a peninsula that projects north-westward into the Moray Firth, surrounding it by water on three sides. People from Burghead are called Brochers. The present town was built between 1805 and 1809, destroying in the process more than half of the site of an important Pictish hill fort. General Roy's map shows the defences as they existed in the 18th century although he wrongly attributed them to the Romans. The fort was probably a major Pictish centre and was where carved slabs depicting bulls, known as the Burghead Bulls, were found. A chambered well of some considerable antiquity was discovered in 1809 and walls and a roof were later added to help preserve it. The Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway (I&AJR) was a railway company in Scotland, created to connect other railways and complete the route between Inverness and Aberdeen. The Inverness and Nairn Railway had opened to the public on 7 November 1855 and the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNoSR) was building from Aberdeen to Keith. The I&AJR opened, closing the gap, on 18 August 1856. It found the GNoSR a difficult partner and passenger journeys from Inverness to the south via Aberdeen were inconvenient and circuitous. Alves Railway Station
Alves was a railway station located near Elgin, in the Scottish administrative area of Moray. The station was the junction where the line to Burghead and Hopeman diverged from the line from Aberdeen to Inverness. History Opened by the Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway, then absorbed by the Highland Railway, it became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway during the Grouping of 1923. The line then passed on to the Scottish Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948. It was then closed by the British Railways Board in May 1965 as a result of the Beeching Axe. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011.
