Custer County, Colorado
Custer County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,704. The county seat is Westcliffe. History Custer County was created by the Colorado legislature on March 9, 1877, out of the southern half of Fremont County. It was named in honor of Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, who had died the previous year. Originally set in Ula, the county seat moved to Rosita in 1878, and to Silver Cliff in 1886 before settling in Westcliffe in 1928. The county was the site of a silver rush during the 1870s. Thousands of men poured into the county during this time in the hunt for silver. Some of the notable mines include the Geyser Mine (on the north edge of the town of Silver Cliff), the Bassick Mine (near the ghost town of Querida) and the Bull Domingo (north of Silver Cliff). Beulah is an unincorporated community and a post office located within the Beulah Valley census-designated place in Pueblo County, Colorado, United States. The Beulah Post Office has the ZIP code 81023. Beulah is a part of the Beulah Valley CDP (census-designated place). Beulah lies along State Highway 78 about 21 miles southwest of Pueblo, in the foothills of the Wet Mountains. History The town of Mace's Hole was settled in 1862. The town was named for Juan Maes, anglicized to "Mace," a bandit who used the valley for a hideout. The Mace's Hole Post Office opened on April 23, 1873. A local preacher took umbrage at the town's name and suggested the biblical name Beulah as a more wholesome alternative. The name of the town was changed to Beulah on October 25, 1876. The name is a reference to Isaiah 62:4; it comes from the Hebrew for "married." San Isabel National Forest is located in central Colorado. The forest contains 19 of the state's 53 fourteeners, peaks over high, including Mount Elbert, the highest point in Colorado. Colorado State Highway 165
State Highway 165 (SH 165) is a state highway in southern Colorado. SH 165's western terminus is at SH 96 east of Silver Cliff, and the eastern terminus is at Interstate 25 (I-25), U.S. Route 85 (US 85) and US 87 near Colorado City. Route description SH 165 begins in the west at a junction with SH 96 roughly fifteen miles east of Silver Cliff. From there the road proceeds to the southeast through portions of San Isabel National Forest. One notable attraction on the route is Bishop Castle, about south of SH 96. After Fairview, the highway meets the southwest end of SH 78 near San Isabel, through which SH 165 also passes. After San Isabel, the highway turns more nearly easterly and passes out of the national forest and though Rye. The route continues east through Colorado City before reaching its eastern terminus at exit 74 of I-25. The highway forms part of the Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway.
