Coliseum Building And Hall
The Coliseum Building and Hall is a historic structure in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. It is located in the Longfellow community at the intersection of East Lake Street and 27th Avenue South. The building was constructed in 1917 and originally served as a department store and dance hall. In 2020, the building was damaged by arson during riots after the murder of George Floyd. The Coliseum Building and Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2022. Description The Coliseum Building and Hall is located at 2708 East Lake Street in Minneapolis, and a center of the "downtown" Longfellow community. It was designed by architect L. J. Longfellow, Minneapolis
Longfellow is a defined community in Minneapolis, Minnesota which includes five smaller neighborhoods inside of it: Seward, Cooper, Hiawatha, Howe and Longfellow. The community is a mix of agri-industrial properties along the old Northern Pacific Railway, expansive parkland surrounding the famous Minnehaha Falls, and smaller residential areas. The community is grouped with South Minneapolis between the city's eastern border with the Mississippi River and the Metro Blue Line, Longfellow takes its name from Longfellow neighborhood which in turn is named after Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. On , George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was murdered in the U.S. city of Minneapolis by Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old white police officer. Floyd had been arrested on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 bill. Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for over nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face-down in a street.
