Cohomological Dimension
In abstract algebra, cohomological dimension is an invariant of a group which measures the homological complexity of its representations. It has important applications in geometric group theory, topology, and algebraic number theory. Cohomological dimension of a group As most cohomological invariants, the cohomological dimension involves a choice of a "ring of coefficients" ''R'', with a prominent special case given by ''R'' = Z, the ring of integers. Let ''G'' be a discrete group, ''R'' a non-zero ring with a unit, and ''RG'' the group ring. Richard Swan
Richard Gordon Swan (; born 1933) is an American mathematician who is known for the Serre–Swan theorem relating the geometric notion of vector bundles to the algebraic concept of projective modules, and for the Swan representation, an ''l''-adic projective representation of a Galois group. His work has mainly been in the area of algebraic K-theory. Education and career As an undergraduate at Princeton University, Swan was one of five winners in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition in 1952. He earned his Ph.D. in 1957 from Princeton University under the supervision of John Coleman Moore. In 1969 he proved in full generality what is now known as the Stallings-Swan theorem. In mathematics, specifically in ring theory, a torsion element is an element of a module that yields zero when multiplied by some non-zero-divisor of the ring. The torsion submodule of a module is the submodule formed by the torsion elements. A torsion module is a module that equals its torsion submodule. A module is torsion-free if its torsion submodule comprises only the zero element. This terminology is more commonly used for modules over a domain, that is, when the regular elements of the ring are all its nonzero elements. In mathematics, orientability is a property of some topological spaces such as real vector spaces, Euclidean spaces, surfaces, and more generally manifolds that allows a consistent definition of "clockwise" and "counterclockwise".
