Classic Tetris World Championship
The Classic Tetris World Championship (CTWC) is a video game competition series, hosted by the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. The competition launched in 2010, during the filming of '' Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters'' to determine the world's greatest ''Tetris'' player. In its first two years, the competition was held in Los Angeles, California, but was moved to Portland, Oregon, in 2012, and has been held there annually since (with the exceptions of the 2020 and 2021 tournaments, held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The contestants play the 1989 Nintendo version of ''Tetris'' on actual Nintendo Entertainment System consoles and CRT televisions. The final rounds are streamed online with live-edited screens and heads-up display to improve viewer experience. Tetris (NES Video Game)
''Tetris'' (or Classic ''Tetris'') is a puzzle video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) released in 1989, based on ''Tetris'' (1984) by Alexey Pajitnov. It is the first official console release of ''Tetris'' to have been developed and published by Nintendo. It was preceded by an official ''Tetris'' for Family Computer in Japan in December 1988, and an unofficial ''Tetris'' by Atari in North America in May 1989. A tetromino is a geometric shape composed of four squares, connected orthogonally (i.e. at the edges and not the corners). A single-elimination, knockout, or sudden death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the tournament champion. A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost ''two'' games or matches. It stands in contrast to a single-elimination tournament, in which only ''one'' defeat results in elimination. The Nintendo World Championships (NWC) is a nationwide video game competition series, organized by Nintendo of America at no particular interval. The first Nintendo World Championships was in 1990, touring 29 American cities, being hosted in Los Angeles, CA twice. The NWC was conceived by Steve Grossman and Jay Coleman, principals at EMCI, Nintendo's marketing agency. The event won numerous marketing awards and was sponsored by Pepsi, Reebok, and Nabisco.
