Clarence Valley Council
Clarence Valley Council is a local government area in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. The council services an area of and draws its name from the Clarence River, which flows through most of the council area. The area under management is adjacent to the Pacific Highway, the Gwydir Highway and the North Coast railway line. The Clarence Valley region includes the coastal plain and lower valleys of the Clarence and Nymboida river. Most of the valley is agricultural; however, the oceanside towns of Yamba and Iluka are popular holiday resorts. The council was formed in February 2004 by the amalgamation of the City of Grafton and Maclean Shire, and parts of Copmanhurst, Pristine Waters and Richmond Valley local government areas, and the activities of North Coast Water and Clarence River County Council. Pacific Highway (Australia)
Pacific Highway is a national highway and major transport route along the central east coast of Australia, with the majority of it being part of Australia's Highway 1. The highway and its adjoining Pacific Motorway between Brisbane and Brunswick Heads and Pacific Motorway between Sydney and Newcastle links the state capitals of Sydney in New South Wales with Brisbane in Queensland, approximately paralleling the Tasman Sea of the South Pacific Ocean coast, via Gosford, Newcastle, Taree, Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Coffs Harbour, Grafton, and Ballina. Additionally, between Brunswick Heads and Port Macquarie (excepting for a short stretch around Coffs Harbour), the road is also signed as Pacific Motorway, but has not been legally gazetted as such. Pacific Highway no longer includes former sections of the highway between Brunswick Heads and Brisbane that have been legally renamed. Brooms Head, New South Wales
Brooms Head is a coastal village, located 20km from Maclean in northern New South Wales. At the 2021 census, Brooms Head had a population of 271 people. History The area that is now Brooms Head was originally inhabited by the Yaegl people. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area between Brooms Head and Sandon was a common meeting and hunting point for the Yaegl. The name Brooms Head was first used in 1870 when a broom thought to have come from the wreck of the schooner 'Eureka', was washed up on the beach, replacing the earlier name of Cakora Point. Early sources often used the spelling "Broome's Head" until the mid-20th century. Residents from Maclean and farmers from around the Lower Clarence began to camp around Brooms Head from the 1880s. Baryulgil, New South Wales
Baryulgil is a rural locality in north-eastern New South Wales, Australia. The locality is on the Clarence River in the Clarence Valley Council local government area. History According to the Geographical Names Board, the name is derived from an Aboriginal language, meaning a certain species of large lizard, although it is also "apparently a corruption of 'Yulgilbar' the name of Edwards Ogelvie's run". Baryulgil Post Office opened on 1 January 1896 and closed in 1991. Asbestos mining Historically, other than agriculture, asbestos mining had been the most important industry in the Baryulgil area. The Baryulgil asbestos mine operated from 1953 to 1979. Angourie, New South Wales
Angourie is a coastal village in the Clarence Valley Council of New South Wales, Australia. Copmanhurst Shire was a local government area in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. Copmanhurst Shire was proclaimed on 7 March 1906, one of 134 shires created after the passing of the ''Local Government (Shires) Act 1905''. The shire offices were in Grafton.
