City Walls Stakes
The City Walls Stakes is a Listed flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at York over a distance of 5 furlongs (1,006 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July. The race was transferred to York in 2011 having previously been run at Chester. It was run as a handicap prior to becoming a Conditions race in 1993. Conditions Races
Conditions races are horse races in which the weights carried by the runners are laid down by the conditions attached to the race. Weights are allocated according to the sex of the runners, with female runners carrying less weight than males; the age of the runners, with younger horses receiving weight from older runners to allow for relative maturity, referred to as weight for age; and the quality of the runners, with horses that have won certain values of races giving weight to less successful entrants. Conditions races are distinct from handicap races, for which the weights carried are laid down by an official handicapper to equalise the difference in ability between the runners. In Great Britain, for example, the British Horseracing Authority's rules define a conditions race as being one "which is none of the following; a Handicap Race or a Novice Race, a race restricted to Maiden Horses, or a race governed by Selling or Claiming provisions." Patrick Cosgrave (born 2 June 1982 in Banbridge) is a Northern Irish flat racing jockey based in England. Jason Watson (jockey)
Jason Watson (born May 2000) is a Group 1-winning British jockey who was Champion Apprentice in 2018. Watson was born in Brighton, to a postman father. He started riding at a riding school in Lewes at age 6, under the tutelage of ex-jump jockey Ray Goldstein. He left school at 13 to be home-schooled. His first ride was on Breakheart, trained by Gary Moore, at Kempton in February 2017. He came second. His first win came on Many Dreams, again for Moore, at Salisbury in May, his fourth ride. In total in 2017 he rode two winners from 41 rides. In August 2018, he won his first major race, the Stewards' Cup at Goodwood on the Hugo Palmer trained Gifted Master, and began to be noticed for the number of competitive handicaps he was winning at major courses. Winter Power
Winter Power (foaled 16 March 2018) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. She is a specialist sprinter who has raced exclusively over the minimum distance of five furlongs. As a two-year-old in 2020 she won four of her nine races including the Listed Harry Rosebery Stakes and the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes. In the following season she won the Westow Stakes, City Walls Stakes and Nunthorpe Stakes. Daniel Tudhope
Daniel "Danny" Tudhope (born 1 December 1985) is a Group 1-winning Scottish jockey. He is stable jockey to David O'Meara, for whom he has won most of his major races. Background Tudhope grew up in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. He had no family connection with racing, and only considered a career as a jockey when it was suggested to him by a careers advisor. He graduated from the Northern Racing College and was apprentice to Declan Carroll in Yorkshire. Career He had his first professional rides in 2003, and won his first race at San Rossore, Pisa, Italy in October of that year as part of an initiative for young riders to compete across Europe. Richard Fahey is a racehorse trainer, based in Malton, North Yorkshire. He has saddled over 60 Group race and Listed winners in the UK, Ireland, France and Canada. Luke Morris
Luke Morris (born 20 October 1988) is an English jockey who competes in flat racing. Background Morris comes from a racing background, his grandfather Joe Tate, uncle Jason Tate and cousin Ryan Tate all being jockeys. He was born in Oxford and moved to Newmarket as a child. He began riding out for Michael Bell while still at school. He completed a course at the British Racing School and became apprenticed to Bell. Marsha (16 March 2013 – 2023) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was a specialist sprinter, all but one of whose victories came over the minimum distance of five furlongs (1000 metres). After winning two minor races as a juvenile in 2015, she made progress throughout the following year, taking the Land O'Burns Fillies' Stakes and the City Walls Stakes before ending her season with a win in the Prix de l'Abbaye. Andrea Atzeni
Andrea Atzeni (born 26 March 1991) is a professional Italian jockey based in England. He hails from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia and his family has no history of racing; his father is a farmer and his mother a dentist. Atzeni however expressed an interest in racing at a young age, competing in pony races in Sardinia. Aged 15, he moved to Milan and started working for Italian trainer Alduino Botti. Two years later he emigrated to England and joined the 'Prestige Place' stables of Alduino's son Marco in Newmarket. Robert Cowell
Robert Cowell (born 29 November 1968) is an English racehorse trainer based in Newmarket, who is widely regarded as one of the best trainers of horses running over sprint distances. Jwala (horse)
Jwala (9 April 2009 – 8 December 2013) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2011 she was beaten in her first four races before recording her first success in a minor race at Wolverhampton Racecourse. In the following year she won her first two races before finishing second to Sole Power in a Listed race at Doncaster. Jwala reached her peak as a four-year-old in 2013. After being beaten in her first four races she defeated a strong field to win the City Walls Stakes at York. At the same track in August she recorded a 40/1 upset win in the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes. She was scheduled to retire from racing at the end of the year but was killed in a fall at Sha Tin Racecourse in December.
