City Of Marion
The City of Marion is a local government area in part of the southern and western suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. The council offices are in the suburb of Sturt. History The District Council of Brighton was established in 1853, centred at the then rural village of Marion (laid out in 1838) south west of Adelaide. The district council was renamed to District Council of Marion in 1886 to distinguish it from the adjacent Town of Brighton, the latter having been detached from the Brighton district council in 1858. In 1944 the district council was gazetted a municipality and thereafter known as the City of Marion. Office bearers the Marion council comprises the mayor and 12 ward councillors across 6 wards, as follows: Kris Hanna is the current Mayor of the City of Marion and was sworn in for his second term as Mayor in November 2018. Sturt, South Australia
Sturt is a suburb of Adelaide in the City of Marion local government area. It was named after the explorer Captain Charles Sturt. Sturt is in the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of Gibson and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Boothby. Marino is a coastal suburb in the south of Adelaide, South Australia that's surrounded by a conservation park and rugged coastline. Marino's elevated position provides panoramic views of the ocean – Gulf St Vincent, the metropolitan beaches and Adelaide CBD. Hallett Cove, South Australia
Hallett Cove is a coastal suburb of Adelaide, South Australia located in the City of Marion south of the Adelaide city centre. It has a population of more than 12,000 people. Adjoining suburbs are Marino to the north, Trott Park and Sheidow Park to the east and Lonsdale to the south. The name Kareildung has been mistakenly ascribed to Hallett Cove as an Indigenous name. The Kaurna name of Murrkangga was derived from the meaning of Kareildung and applied specifically to the Amphitheatre in the Hallett Cove Conservation Park. Sites within the conservation park are of great geological and archaeological significance, as well as containing sites of great cultural significance to the Kaurna people, including a significant site on the Tjilbruke Dreaming Track. Glengowrie () is a suburb of the Australian city of Adelaide, approximately 12 kilometres south west of the city centre. The name Glengowrie means "Glen of Gowrie", so called in honour of Lord Gowrie (formerly, Alexander Gore Arkwright Hore-Ruthven), Governor-General of Australia from 1936 to 1944. Glandore, South Australia
Glandore (postcode 5037) is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, partly in the City of Marion and partly in the City of West Torrens. The name is believed to come from Glandore in County Cork, Ireland, whence the family of John O'Dea, one of the original property owners of the area, came. Edwardstown, South Australia
Edwardstown is an inner southern-western suburb located 6 km southwest of Adelaide in the City of Marion. In 1989 the suburb of Edwardstown was split, with the portion east of South Road becoming Melrose Park. This occurred as the suburb was quite large, located on either side of South Road and was in the jurisdiction of two local government councils, with the larger western side belonging to the City of Marion. Edwardstown is in the South Australian House of Assembly districts of Badcoe and Elder, and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Boothby. Edwardstown is home to the Castle Plaza Shopping Centre. Edwardstown is served by the Woodlands Park and Edwardstown railway stations. Dover Gardens, South Australia
Dover Gardens is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, in the City of Marion. History Settlement of the area dates from the mid-1800s, with land used mainly for farming, orchards and vineyards. Some growth took place from the late 1800s into the 1920s. Substantial development did not occur until after the Second World War, with rapid growth during the 1950s and 1960s. The population fluctuated slightly between 1991 and 2006, due to small changes in dwelling stock and the average number of persons living in each dwelling. Darlington is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia part of which is in the City of Onkaparinga and the City of Marion. For many years, Darlington was the southern entrance to Adelaide's urban area on Main South Road. It hosted many service stations of different brands. It represents the convergence of Flagstaff Road to Main South Road from the south, with Seacombe Road to the west, Diagonal Road to the northwest and Marion Road to the north with South Road continuing northeast. Clovelly Park is an inner southern suburb of Adelaide in the local government area of the City of Marion. Before becoming an 'advanced' suburb, it was a farm and vineyard. The suburb is bordered by Daws Road to the north, South Road to the east, Sturt Road to the south, and a combination of Percy Avenue and the Flinders railway line to the west. Ascot Park is a suburb in the south-western part of Adelaide in the City of Marion. It was named after Ascot Racecourse in England. Ascot Park is bordered in the west by Marion Road, to the north by Wood Street, in the east by Robert Street and West Street and to the south by the southernmost of Daws Road and the Seaford railway line. It is adjacent to Park Holme, Edwardstown, South Plympton and Mitchell Park. Felicity-Ann Lewis
Dr Felicity-Ann Lewis (born 1957) is a former mayor of the City of Marion and South Australia's Australian of the Year for 2014. She received a Centenary Medal for service to the community, particularly as Mayor, City of Marion. Lewis has worked towards reconciliation with Aboriginal people and was on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial Fundraising Committee. She has also worked to assist settlement for refugees and migrants. She received a Doctorate of Education from University of South Australia in August 2013 and is a retired senior lecturer in Health Education at Flinders University. Local government Lewis served four terms as mayor of Marion between 2000 and 2014. She was also National President of the Australian Local Government Association.
