Cinédia (originally called the Cinearte studios) was a Brazilian film studio established on 15 March 1930 in Rio de Janeiro, and remained in continual operation until 1951. Between 1930 and 1945, Cinédia averaged two films a year, with a high of five in 1936. ''Ganga Bruta'' (literally translated as "Brutal Gang"; also known as ''Rough Diamond'') is a 1933 Brazilian drama film directed by Humberto Mauro. Starring Durval Bellini and Déa Selva, it follows a man who, after killing his wife on their wedding night, moves to a city where he becomes part of a love triangle. It was produced between 1931 and 1932 for Adhemar Gonzaga at his studio Cinédia. On its initial release, the film was highly criticized and its poor viewing figures resulted in financial losses for the distribution company, but later critics and film directors expressed praise for it. ''Estudantes'' is a Brazilian musical comedy film directed by Wallace Downey and starring Carmen Miranda, Barbosa Júnior, Mesquitinha and Mário Reis. Initially titled Folia de Estudantes, this motion picture was shot entirely in a single week at the studios and labs of Cinédia. It premiered on July 8, 1935 at The Cine Alhambra, in Rio de Janeiro. It played in most theaters for two weeks. It was also shown in São Paulo, at Cine Odeon (Sala Vermelha), debuting on July 15 of that year. Viewed historically as a lost film, as of 2017, no prints of this motion picture are known to exist. Plot Carmen Miranda, in her role as a radio singer named Mimi, is seen courted by three students. Humberto Mauro
Humberto Duarte Mauro (30 April 1897 – 5 November 1983) was a Brazilian film director. His best known work is '' Ganga Bruta''. He is often considered the greatest director of early Brazilian cinema. Career Mauro's second feature film ''Thesouro Perdido'' (Lost Treasure) won the Brazilian "Film of the Year" award in 1927. Later that year, Phebo Sul America Film was reorganized into Phebo Brasil Film. The first film released under the new Phebo was ''Braza Dormida'' (Sleeping Ember). ''Braza Dormida'' was a boxoffice success and furthered Mauro's career as one of Brazil's leading directors. Adhemar Gonzaga (26 January 1901 – 29 January 1978) was a Brazilian actor, screenwriter, film producer, and director. ''Hello, Hello Brazil!'' (Portuguese: ''Allô, Allô, Brasil!'') is a 1935 Brazilian musical film directed by Wallace Downey, Alberto Ribeiro and João de Barro. ''A Voz do Carnaval'' (in English, literally ''The Carnival Voice'') is a 1933 Brazilian short film documentary, directed by Adhemar Gonzaga and released by production company Cinédia. With no copies preserved, it is considered a lost film. Production This semidocumentary was inspired by a story of Joracy Camargo and released on the eve of Rio Carnival. Using the Movietone sound system, it was the first Brazilian film to record optical sound directly from Rio streets. The documentary sequences filmed in the streets were interspersed with scenes filmed in the studio, showing comedian Palitos, in the role of King Momo.
