The Church of God (Huntsville, Alabama) is a Pentecostal holiness body of Christians, formerly based in Huntsville, Alabama. The Church of God (Huntsville, Alabama) shares a common history with the Church of God of Prophecy (COGOP) up until their division in 1943. The original Church of God was led by Ambrose Jessup Tomlinson (1865-1943) until his death. The leaders of the church determined to install Milton A. Tomlinson as the General Overseer of the church. Milton's brother, Homer Aubrey Tomlinson, withdrew and established church headquarters in Queens Village, Queens. After the death of Homer Tomlinson, Voy M. Bullen was chosen as his successor and headquarters were moved to Huntsville, Alabama, closer to the center of the movement. Bishop Bullen chose Danny R. Patrick as his successor, prior to his death in 1997. Bishop Patrick moved headquarters yet again, to his hometown of Scottville, Kentucky. The Holiness movement is a Christian movement that emerged chiefly within 19th-century Methodism, and to a lesser extent other traditions such as Quakerism, Anabaptism, and Restorationism. Huntsville is a city in Madison County, Limestone County, and Morgan County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Madison County. Located in the Appalachian region of northern Alabama, Huntsville is the most populous city in the state. Huntsville was founded within the Mississippi Territory in 1805 and became an incorporated town in 1811. Spurling (1857–1935), a Missionary Baptist minister, and his father Richard Spurling (1810–91), an ordained elder, rejected some of the views of the Baptists in his area as not being in accord with New Testament Christianity. Ambrose Jessup Tomlinson
Ambrose Jessup (A.J.) Tomlinson (September 22, 1865 – October 2, 1943), a former Quaker, united with the Holiness Church at Camp Creek in 1903. With his drive, vision, and organizational skills, he was elected the first general overseer of the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee) in 1903. He also served as the first president of the church's Lee College, later known as Lee University (1918–1922). In 1923, Tomlinson was impeached, causing a division which led to the creation, by followers of Tomlinson, of what would become the Church of God of Prophecy. Early life A.J. Tomlinson was born to a prominent Quaker family near Westfield, Indiana. Homer Aubrey Tomlinson
Homer Aubrey Tomlinson (October 25, 1892 – December 5, 1968), was an American bishop in the Church of God of Prophecy, a Pentecostal Holiness Christian denomination founded by his father, Ambrose Jessup Tomlinson in 1922. Biography Tomlinson was born on October 25, 1892, in Westfield, Indiana, to Ambrose Jessup Tomlinson. His younger brother, Milton Ambrose Tomlinson, was decided by its presbytery to be God's chosen successor for General Overseer in 1944. The two brothers did not get along, so Homer founded his own splinter "Church of God" denomination around the same time and became its bishop. He founded the Theocratic Party and was its candidate for U.S. President for elections from 1952 to 1968. Scottsville is a home rule-class city in Allen County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is the seat of its county. The population was 4,226 during the 2010 U.S. Census.
