Christ Taking Leave Of His Mother (Lotto)
''Christ Taking Leave of his Mother'' is an oil-on-canvas painting by Lorenzo Lotto, dated to 1521 and now in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. It has several similarities with the small ''Christ Taking Leave of his Mother'' by Correggio now in London. It is signed and dated "Laurentjo / Lotto Pictor / 1521", the same year as the artist's Santo Spirito Altarpiece and San Bernardino Altarpiece were created for Elisabetta Rota, a noblewoman from Bergamo who is shown at the bottom right of the painting. She was the wife of Domenico Tassi, who himself commissioned a ''St Jerome'' and a ''Nativity'' from Lotto – the latter shows a portrait of Tassi and it and the Berlin work probably originally formed a pair. The scene of Christ saying farewell to the Virgin Mary before setting off for Jerusalem to be crucified is popular in devotional literature although it does not appear in the Gospels. Lorenzo Lotto
Lorenzo Lotto (c. 1480 – 1556/57) was an Italian painter, draughtsman, and illustrator, traditionally placed in the Venetian school, though much of his career was spent in other north Italian cities. He painted mainly altarpieces, religious subjects and portraits. He was active during the High Renaissance and the first half of the Mannerist period, but his work maintained a generally similar High Renaissance style throughout his career, although his nervous and eccentric posings and distortions represented a transitional stage to the Florentine and Roman Mannerists. Antonio Allegri da Correggio (August 1489 – 5 March 1534), usually known as just Correggio (, also , , ), was the foremost painter of the Parma school of the High Italian Renaissance, who was responsible for some of the most vigorous and sensuous works of the sixteenth century. San Bernardino Altarpiece
The San Bernardino Altarpiece is an oil on canvas painting by Lorenzo Lotto, created in 1521, named after the chapel on Via Pignolo in Bergamo, for which it was commissioned by the 'Disciplinati', a lay confraternity. It still hangs in its original position. Lotto also worked on the Santo Spirito Altarpiece at around the same time for the Church of Santo Spirito in Bergamo. The work is signed and dated "LLotus / M D XXI" on the lowest step in the centre.
