Chilean Referendum, 1989
A constitutional referendum was held in Chile on 30 July 1989. Nohlen, D (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume II'', p262 The proposed changes to the constitution were approved by 87.7% of voters. Background If approved, 54 constitutional reforms were to be implemented, among which the reform of the way that the Constitution itself could be reformed, the restriction of state of emergency dispositions, the affirmation of political pluralism, the strengthening of constitutional rights as well as of the democratic principle and participation to the political life. The only parties to advocate a "No" vote were the right-wing Party of the South and the Chilean Socialist Party (not to be confused with the Socialist Party of Chile). Military Dictatorship Of Chile (1973–1990)
An authoritarian military dictatorship ruled Chile for seventeen years, between 11 September 1973 and 11 March 1990. The dictatorship was established after the democratically-elected socialist government of Salvador Allende was overthrown in a coup d'état backed by the United States on 11 September 1973. During this time, the country was ruled by a military junta headed by General Augusto Pinochet. The military used the breakdown of democracy and the economic crisis that took place during Allende's presidency to justify its seizure of power. The dictatorship presented its mission as a "national reconstruction." The coup was the result of multiple forces, including pressure from conservative groups, certain political parties, union strikes and other domestic unrest, as well as international factors.
