A constitutional referendum was held in Chile on 30 July 1989. Nohlen, D (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume II'', p262 The proposed changes to the constitution were approved by 87.7% of voters. Background If approved, 54 constitutional reforms were to be implemented, among which the reform of the way that the Constitution itself could be reformed, the restriction of state of emergency dispositions, the affirmation of political pluralism, the strengthening of constitutional rights as well as of the democratic principle and participation to the political life. The only parties to advocate a "No" vote were the right-wing Party of the South and the Chilean Socialist Party (not to be confused with the Socialist Party of Chile). General elections were held in Chile on 14 December 1989,Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume II'', p262 bringing an end to the military regime that had been in place since 1973. Patricio Aylwin of Concertación alliance was elected President, whilst the alliance also won a majority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies and in the elected Senate seats. From the 1989 elections onwards the military had officially left the political future of the country to civilians to be elected. Pinochet did not endorse any candidate publicly. Former dictatorship minister Hernán Büchi ran for president as candidate of the two right-wing parties, RN and UDI.
