Chief Scout (The Scout Association)
The Scout Association's Chief Scout is the head of its youth programmes. The role is now merely a nominal and titular ceremonial figurehead. The association's present Chief Scout is the British adventurer and TV presenter Bear Grylls. History Robert Baden-Powell made himself Chief Scout of his own Scouting organisation, The Boy Scouts Association. The Scout Association
The Scout Association is the largest Scouting organisation in the United Kingdom and is the World Organization of the Scout Movement's recognised member for the United Kingdom. Following the origin of Scouting in 1907, the association was formed in 1910 and incorporated in 1912 by a royal charter under its previous name of The Boy Scouts Association. The association is the largest national Scout organisation in Europe, representing 35% of the membership of the European Scout Region. , the association claims to provide activities to 464,700 young people (aged –25) in the UK with over 116,400 adult volunteers which is more than one adult for each 4 young people. Garth Morrison
Sir William Garth Morrison, (8 April 1943 – 24 May 2013) was the Scout Association's Chief Scout from 1988 to 1996 and a member of the World Scout Committee from 1992 to 2002. Morrison attended Pangbourne College where he was Chief Cadet (i.e. head boy) and Captain of the English Schools Rugby Football Union (15 group). He continued his education at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth where he was awarded the Queen's Telescope and Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts. He spent twelve years in the Royal Navy, as an engineer officer, leaving in 1973 with the rank of Lieutenant. He subsequently took over the running the family farm in West Fenton, East Lothian, Scotland which provided grains for brewers and distillers in Scotland. Chief Scout (Scouting Ireland)
The Chief Scout is the leader of Scouting Ireland. As Chairperson of the National Council and National Management Committee the Chief Scout is responsible for co-ordinating the activities of the Association with the help of the National Team for Policy Implementation and Co-ordination. The role is a volunteer one, normally elected every third year at National Council, and works with the CEO, the head of the professional staff function of the association. The first Chief Scout elected was Martin Burbridge, a former member of Scouting Ireland (CSI). He stepped down in September 2008, and three others have held the role since then. Silver Wolf Award (The Scout Association)
The Silver Wolf is the highest award made by The Scout Association "for services of the most exceptional character." It is an unrestricted gift of the Chief Scout. The award consists of a Silver Wolf suspended from a dark green and yellow neck ribbon. History Since its inception by Robert Baden-Powell, the Silver Wolf has remained the "unrestricted gift of the Chief Scout", although "County Commissioners and overseas Chief Scouts may submit recommendations to Scout Headquarters." King's Scout
A King's Scout is a Scout who has attained the King's Scout Award. The King's Scout Award is the highest youth award achievable in the Scouting movement in the Commonwealth realms, including the United Kingdom, Canada (Queen's Venturer Award), Australia, and New Zealand (Queen's Scout Kauri Award), where Scouts operate under the patronage of King Charles III. Whether the award recipient is a Queen's or King's Scout depends on who is the current monarch of the Commonwealth realms. Initially the award required demonstrated proficiency in standardised Scoutcraft and skills useful for service to others and the nation. Wayne Bulpitt
Wayne Bulpitt, Order of the British Empire, CBE (born June 1961) was the UK Chief Commissioner for The Scout Association from 2009 until 2016. Life Wayne Bulpitt was born in June 1961 and has lived in Guernsey since 1983. In 1988 he married his wife Julie, with whom he has two children. Career Bulpitt founded a financial service consulting company, Active Group, in 2001. He is involved with a number of other companies that deal with financial services and investments. George Purdy
W. George Purdy, CBE (born 16 April 1942) was the Scout Association's Chief Scout from March 1996 to 2004. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire "for services to young people" in the 2002 Queen's New Year Honours list. His participation with the Scout Association started at 8 years old as a Cub Scout. In 1960 he became an Assistant Scout Leader in the 45th West Belfast Scout Group. In 1994, he became the Scout Association's Chief Commissioner of Northern Ireland and its Chief Scout from 1996 to 2004. He was the first Scout Association Chief Scout not to have spent time in the British armed forces. A Chief Scout is the principal or head scout for an organization such as the military, colonial administration or expedition or a talent scout in performing, entertainment or creative arts, particularly sport. In sport, a Chief Scout can be the principal talent scout seeking new players or a tactical scout. Sir William Gladstone, 7th Baronet
Sir Erskine William Gladstone of Fasque and Balfour, 7th Baronet, (29 October 1925 – 29 March 2018) was a teacher and an officer in the Royal Navy. The Scout Association appointed him as its Chief Scout from 1972 to 1982. Gladstone was the son of Sir Charles Gladstone and Isla Margaret Gladstone (née Crum), and a great-grandson of the former prime minister, William Ewart Gladstone. He was educated at Eton, and joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in 1943 and saw action in World War II mainly based on destroyers in the Indian Ocean. Upon leaving the navy (with the rank of lieutenant), he received an honours degree in history at Christ Church, Oxford. He then entered the teaching profession, with positions at Shrewsbury and Eton, and he became head master of Lancing in 1961. He retired from the teaching profession in 1969.
